Leupold VX-R scopes

So I been looking for a new scope for my slug gun since deer season is around the corner. I live in IL and we can only use slug guns (rifled barreled shot guns) to deer hunt during firearm deer season. I have a Savage bolt action 20 gauge slug gun. I currently have a junk tasco red dot non telescopic scope on it now. When a deer is 50 yards and farther the red dot covers up half its body. The market for slug gun scopes is small and the ones that are out there are cheap off brand junk. So the other day I was reading a new Cabelas magazine and seen Leupold came out with a new scope (I think its new anyway?) called the VX-R. Here is a little bit about them. They all come with 30mm tubes, you can pick from 5 different illuminated hunter style reticles (FIREDOT reticles), they come in 2-7, 3-9 or 4-12 power and they come in 20mm, 33mm, 40mm or 50mm objective lens. They all have really good eye relief too. Im gonna order one that is 3-9x50 with the ballistic hunter reticle. This scope seems PERFECT for a slug gun! It actually seems like a great scope for any hunting rifle! I figured I would post this for all my fellow hunter to read. Im sure there is many of you right now thinking about a new scope for you hunting rifle. Below is a link. When reading the link MAKE SURE YOU WATCH THE YOUTUBE VIDEO ON THE SIDE THAT SHOWS THE RETICLES. Those reticles look awesome and would be great for hunting. Thanks and have a great day!

I use a VX-R Patrol on my Scar 17 for deer hunting. Great scope/reticle for sure for the money.

Dang, Jelrod, do the deer shoot back where you're from? That's some serious hunting firepower!

Ha. No shooting back. Where I hunt its thick and shots are short. This gun is light and handy for getting through the thickets to my stands.

Im in the same boat somewhat. On our (bro and mine) hunting ground we have 6 tree stands and several decent places to hunt from ground. Some of them are in the middle of the woods where the farthest shot would be 60 yards MAX. Then there are some places where we could get a 500 yard shot. I would never attempt a 500 yard shot with a slug gun, but I would definitely try it with a bolt action center fire rifle at a coyote!

I think they are a great scope for the price range. I got my brother to get one for his 308 for 0-650 yd hunting and even further target shooting. I wish they extended the mil lines all the way down like the "Military" version. The reticle thickness is a little too blocky for great target work, but that won't stop a determined shooter from getting good groups.

For truck hunters, the battery will end of dying on the central illuminated dot, but I admit that after a year of rumbling my brother's scope is still illuminated.

I ran it through some tests when he bought it and it checked out perfect on repeatability although the clicks aren't quite as crisp as the mark 4 or LRT scopes - still had no problem switching from 100,200, 550, 1000 yds or dialing the groups around a target. Some guys say it's mark 4 tough but VX-II glass.

Enjoy it and that is a nice rig. Those rifles are light enough for great brush guns especially with an appropriate scope on it like the VX-R
