Leupold Standard Rings and Bases?

Hey all! I was working on putting my Leupold Std. Rings back on my Savage model 12 VLP when I starting running into problems. I've installed a set of these before, without the proper alignment tools. I know, shame on me :o! I was playing hell getting the front dovetail ring into place, where it was straight and the scope would roll freely in the lower front and rear ring halves. After a bunch of fussing, I turned the ring out of the base and found a chunk of galled steel that I flaked off of the dovetail on the front ring. In your opinions, is this ring and base still usable or, should I get another set? Also, are there better rings and bases to be utilized without spending a mint? Thanks in advance!

Mike

Get a egw 1 piece base and scrounge up a set of burris signature rings with the plastic inserts.

That thought crossed my mind as I was fighting with that ring and base last night Jon ;)! Who is a distributor of the egw 1 piece base? The burris signature rings can be sourced countless places! Thanks!

Mike

most of my bases and rings are leupold. a friend had the same problem and it was so bad the front ring was too loose to be useful. i have always struggled getting the dovetail aligned. would be nice if they had small alignment marks on the base and ring. there are many options, but now i am rapidly becoming a fan of picatinney rails and cross bar type bases with those big hex nuts to really secure them. can be a little more expensive.

I agree, it would be very helpful if they had alignment marks on the dovetail base and ring. The windage adjustment of the rear ring isn't hard to obtain but, getting that damned dovetail front ring straight is something else >:(! Looks like I will be going to a one piece pic style base and the burris signature zee rings. I think that will cure what ails me! I'm afraid that the front ring and base are damaged beyond use anymore and if I were to use them? I know it would be in the back of my mind and the confidence wouldn't be there!

Well, I got home from work and went straight to working on the rifle and I discovered that the ring and base weren't in as bad of shape as what I thought. Skyav8r, you were right! There wasnt't enough damage there to rise any concern! Amazingly enough, it went together relatively easy tonight. Scope is on the rig so now all we have to do is sight it in and do some load development with a new bullet. Thanks!

the guys on this site steered me towards the EGW bases..... thank you guys..... you can not go wrong with these bases. they are very well made, look nice, and perform as well as one could want. I have put them on a couple of guns now. soon i will be selling a whole group of very expensive Leupold rings and bases. I have been using the weaver quad lok rings with them due to the fact that every time i went to mount a scope,i could not find the zee rings. just my two cents.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not opposed to trying the EGW bases and Burris Sig Zee rings! I just took a good look at what I had and was more comfortable than what I was before and decided to use the equipment. The next rifle that I have to bases and rings on will get the EGW, or comparable, one piece base and Burris Sig Zee rings! It just looks way easier to do than the way I have been ;)!

The only downside to the weaver style base and z rings is that if you have a misaligned receiver you will Have to lap the rings ALOT, and maybe still not get it.
