leupold scope identification

I have a friend who bought 3 Leupold scopes for $800. I don't see the Gold ring, but they did have an emblem on the side. Does Leupold make such a scope?

Gunny, I've got some Leupold's from the late 60's, and the gold ring is there on them along with the old arched Leupold emblem/logo. I'd just call Leupold C/S and give them the s/n's to be sure. The s/n can be found on the bottom of the turret boss under the elevation adjustment.

Some of Leupold's tactical scopes do not have the gold ring, but it sounds like these are not them, as $800 would not by three of them. I'd call to make sure.

Leupold makes a number of scopes without the gold ring. The MARK AR scopes are rather inexpensive.

Thanks for the input. I would hate to burst his bubble. Maybe I wait until he starts complaining about the scopes not holding zero before I say anything about fakes.

For a scope to be sold internationally
It must have parts made in different countries None I know of any more is USA made Larry

Larry, both Leupold and Nightforce would be very interested to learn this, especially the part about no scopes are U.S. made. Imagine how surprised they'll be when they find out they're not in the USA as thought! :rolleyes:

Last time I checked, Oregon and Idaho were still both here.

you can start by comparing the serial numbers to this chart, if not here then a call to Leupold would be in order
  1. When was my scope manufactured?
    Every Leupold scope produced since 1974 will have a letter included in the serial number acting as a date-code. Scopes using a letter as a prefix (the beginning of the serial number) were produced between 1974 and 1992. Scopes using a letter as a suffix (the end of the serial number) have been produced after 1992. On the chart below, you will notice the letters I, O, and Q have been omitted as they are easily mistaken for 1, 0, and 0 respectively.

    PREFIX SUFFIX
    E = 1974 A = 1993
    F = 1975 B = 1994
    G = 1976 C = 1995
    H = 1977 D = 1996
    J = 1978 E = 1997
    K = 1979 F = 1998
    L = 1980 G = 1999
    M = 1981 H = 2000
    N = 1982 J = 2001
    P = 1983 K = 2002
    R = 1984 L = 2003
    S = 1985 M = 2004
    T = 1986 N = 2005
    U = 1987 P = 2006
    V = 1988 R = 2007
    W = 1989 T = 2008
    X = 1990 U = 2009
