leupold comp 45

heard people complaining bout too high power of scope before for varmint hunting. too hard to spot ground hog? depends on how far away you are and if your going to be shooting closer than 250 your not going to need nearly the gun or scope would ya?

I have a 45x Leupold on my 22-250, and while I haven't hunted with this setup, I can confidently say it is too much magnification.

I shoot with both eyes open, and finding a bright orange MOA dot on a white target at 200 yards can be challenging. I can only imagine the trouble a prairie dog would give.

Its a great scope for target shooting under 300 yards. When I have stretched out to 600 the mirage is just too much, especially prone. I think a 8-32 range scope would be much better suited to the task of varmint hunting.

When we go at the end of May,the mirage is so bad that I have to turn my 6.5-20 down,so I would think 45X would be much worse.I know from expierence that the small field of view offered with BR scopes makes finding targets very challenging.A good varable power varmint scope,20X or under would be a better choice,IMO. About 4 years ago I took a 6mmAckley to Montana topped with a 40 Power Leupold competition. Once you get used to using it and rough sighting it over the top of the scope, it can be done, but one of the best scope I used in MT was a Leupold 8.5 x 25. However one of the best shots I made was with the 45 Leupold, at one of the PDs being out at 845 yards and the next (most fun) shot was made at 127 yards. I was playing peek-a-boo with a PD and he was just raising his head out of the hole just to show off his eye-ball and the top of his noggin. After about 4 times of this, he raised his head up just to clear the hole and the Sierra 107 grainer went through one eye and out the other. Vaporized Dog!

I agree with light man, i have use12x fixed upto 24x luep fix, and settled on 6.5x20 on all guns, i shoot in WY at ranges upto 600 and find this level handles the field of view/ mirage problems for me and those with me.
