Leupold 7-42x56 questions ?

Joe Salt said:
alf I have shot 1000 yard since you were crapping your pants

Where in the annals of 1K BR history would I find your match results of 1954?

I have had the 15x55 next to the 7x42. Optically the NF is much better. Neither scope is a hunting scope. I shoot past 2k with a 5x25 and never want more. I used that rifle to take my elk last year at 700ish and turned it down to 10x. I think all of the scope mentioned are too heavy for a hunting rig you plan to carry far.

Like most threads, there's no parameters or enough info laid out to give recommendations...

This one only goes 10lbs-10ozs, but its not going on a sheep hunt....

Keith (Cigarcop) just completed the finishing touches on my new hunting rifle, topped with a Leupold 2.5-10 VX-7. At the high end, 10x is more than adequate for a hunting rifle, with a nice field of view.

If I really want to play long, I grab this 338/300 Ultra.

Again, a 40 MOA base with a 5.5-22 on top:

Here's what I had dialed in for 1925 yards.....that's 86.25 MOA

I prefer more X's for a crossover hunting/target set-up, but 10X can work......

This is a 2.5-10 NF on top of my 8 pound #1 coyote getter:

It has done this......12" at 1408 yards

Nice rifles, I also prefer high power variables for hunting, you can always turn down the power but when you really want to see what your shooting at you have the high power to see clearly where and what your shooting at. I run a 8-32x Nightforce BR on my deer rifle, it's on 8x most of the time but I turn it up when I have the time for precise shot placement.

I agree somewhat on X's for a deer rifle in/for certain hunting situations/conditions, but the OP added coyote to the mix, and if there's any calling involved I don't want anything much over 3X on the low side.

Nice rifles alf but I'm still a power nut when it comes to shooting long range, I like it up close and personal! Yes I'm about 8 years older so I hope you weren't still crapping your pants. I started in 1000 yard in 1971 so its been a few years. I guess most of us that still shoot are up in age, the kids now days like computers

everyone has there own opinions . for me i'm 50 we graduated from 3-9's to 4-12's when I was 14 years old. then onto 6.5-20's 8.5 to 25's and so on...what you gain on high you lose on low..But with the newer optics My 5-20 NF SHV I can shoot 20 feet at near dark on 5 power..i kind of loose the reticle a little. it works very well. the 3-18 VX6 you can hunt after dark if there is moon lite on 3 power out to 60-70 yards..so the only place I use low power is at dusk or if I had to shoot up close...Both the VX6 I have and the NF SHV have worked very well as hunting scopes. I just wish I had more power on the top . Thanks guys I do believe you have answered my question on the 7-42. and I have gained some info into areas I don't think about too much. I am not new to long range hunting..we have been shooting across these hills since I was a kid and we did not have the technology that we do today. one story I like to tell is a whitetail I shot across the hill when I was around 20 years old..we saw a few of them feeding around 800 yards(guess ta ment) modern range finders has put it at 750 yrds.. anyhow a older fellow said I don't know why you boys are looking over there ya cant shoot that far...well I got a good rest in a drainage ditch and when I touched off I saw her fall before the recoil took me out of the scope..I was as amazed as anyone..she moved and was sliding down the hill, so I ran the bolt and said to my buddy loudly you think she's finished or should I put another one in her...lol he said no she's done..that was at 10am by the time I got down the hill across a creek, through a few deep ditches, heavy brush up the hill found her,got her gutted and drug to where we could get a four wheeler to her it was 3pm..I since had shot a few far out and have had some long hard days getting to them..lol so now days unless it's a large Buck I pass a lot of shots..because I know how steep it really is over there and how tough a climb it it. with a back pack and a rifle with bi-pods on it..I never weighed it but around 13 lbs or so I bet. I have just left the rifle with a few friends and only took a backpack and knife a few times.

Thanks for everyone's input on this. I would like to say after all the input and careful consideration I went with the Leupold VX6 in 4-24x52 TMOA as I felt it would just be a better compromise . And easier on me price wise. It arrived today
The 34mm tube is BIG but just looking through it is very impressive. will get to range test it this weekend.
