Is this scope usable on anything but a benchrest rifle ? This is probably the finest quality scope I've ever had but I don't understand why someone put it on a Rem. 700P in .308. I don't consider the rifle to be a true benchrester and think the scope is wasted on there.

You're right, they are designed primarily for known distance, "non-moving" targets. At close distances, maybe 150 yards or less, you would have a tough time trying to locate a small target, especially if it's moving around, even a little. Another factor is mirage conditions when you are not able to reduce the magnification. When setting up my bench equipment at the longer distances ( 500 meters max), I must dial down my Nightforce's to 12x, find my very small groundhog target, line up the front & rear rests w/ the rifle in place, then dial up to the maximum (42x) or whatever I think I'll be able to use. If the previous owner (?) was using it for that type of shooting, it probably worked fine. For live groundhog I've even had problems trying to find g'hogs at the closer distances with a fixed power as low as 12, the reason the 3-9's, 4-12's etc. are so popular, for that type of shooting. A great scope, but meant for Benchrest Competition. ;)

Exactly what fdshuster said and when hunting coyotes, and they pop out, how far are they and how much drop or windage and how do I judge that in a fixed high power scope? I can guess but also miss a lot...Best Wishes
