leupold 35x45mm competition or go with the 45 power?

Assuming that you're shooting standard benchrest...

A great many people use the 45X LCS for their 100-200 rifles. If it was too much, they'd do something else.

I, personally, have 45X LCSs on two rifles and a 12-42X NF BR on another. Not that I'm a good shooter, but I don't find it to be too much.

I have a 40 & 45 power LCS. I use the 40 for 100 & 200 meter shooting & the 45 for out to 500. I tried the 45 for score shooting & found that it sometimes was very tough seeing the score rings at 200 because of the mirage. The 40 made it more bearable; for me.

My club range is quite shaded by trees.

I find that 24X is about the upper limit of magnification that I

can use and still find and put the 1/8 MOA dot on to a USRA-IR 50/50

target consistently.

During the Winter ,without the leaves , aiming is much easier.

The higher the magnification the smaller the exit pupil and therefore

the less. light entering your eye. At longer ranges mirage can become quite

an issue with higher magnification.

YMMV

Steve

If it's for registered competition, you will, in all probabilty, get beat by the competitor using a 45x or GREATER power scope......they have a greater ability to read the mirage. It's not how clear you see the target in short range, but how fine you make your corrections for prevailing conditions.
If it's for informal bench shooting where you only shoot in conditions which are favorable to you, you will be happy with either a 35x or 40x.....note however the 35x resale value is much lower.

I have a Leupold 45x on my 6br used for 100-200 Benchrest. Never been a problem. When you think of mirage as wind you can see, then accuracy will improve. Use every indicator that is at your disposal to help.

45 will be perfect. Just give yourself some time to adapt to the higher magnification. Years ago when I built my first rifle for informal bench shooting, I faced this same decision. I could have either bought a 24 or a 36 and decided to go with the 36 so that I could learn about dealing with and learning from mirage. That turned out to be a good decision. Lately I am using an axillary lens that boosts my 36 to something that others tells me looks very much like a 45 Leu., and I like that even more. When the mirage gets too heavy to reliably see the mothball at 200, I aim at something that I can see, and have no problem. This has only happened a couple of times, and I would not trade to a lower magnification to avoid it.

95% of the glass at VFS matches that I attend are 12-42X NF BR or 45X LCS.

I have a 45x Leupold. I shoot at 100-300 yards. At my club there are really no rules regarding weight, caliber, etc. Strictly 'run what you brung' and have fun. Shooting for group size. Back to the OP topic. Had the 45X Leupold on my 6.5 x .284 on a Savage 12. The eye relief to me is extremely critical. Optics are flawless but that eye relief....you have to be right there or you get nothing....could not get used to it as I always felt I was crawling real close to the scope. Might just be me but the recoil of the rifle and the closeness of my eye to the scope never made me feel comfortable. Put the scope on my 6BR and it is perfect. Really a nice match. I love the 45x and at 100yds it is fine. Plenty of folks have that on rifles that recoil way more than 6.5x284, but for me....I just pictured the 3 to 5 stitches in my eyebrow. Love it on my 6BR.

As mentioned in registered 100-300 yard Benchrest match's you will see a lot of competitors using 45 power Leopold's. Look through equipment list. (There are even some that have 50 power march scopes if they can afford them) Some people have concern that with the higher magnification that the scope will "white out" under harsh conditions. With the 30 mm tubes that gather light, this don't seem to be the problem.

Throughout the years people have taken scopes and sent them off to have the power boosted, or they have used aftermarket boosters that screw or push on. Comparing these scope to the newer production 45 Leopold's or 50 Marchs is not comparing apples to apples. Aftermarket boosters enlarge cross hair pictures, cut down on eye relief, and many times the scope optic needs re-adjusted to get a good cross hair picture, sometime the scope just doesn't have enough adjustment to truly accomplish this. Boosted scopes usually have 1 inch tubes, and they just don't preform like the 30 mm tubes will.

With that all said rest assured that the Leupold competition and March scopes are designed for 100-300 yard Benchrest. Some people like 40 power, and some like 45 or more. The best thing to do if possible is find someone that has these scopes and try them out. In my personal opinion I would not mess with the 35 power, the minimum I would go is a 40.

At 100 yards, none of the flags are going to be visible in any scope with centered crosshairs. At 200, most folks get the last two in the bottom. Any scope is going to be the same.

Bottom line is that at 100-200 benchrest, the overwhelming majority of shooters are shooting 42, 45 or 50 power. 36 has fallen by the wayside.

for 600 shooting can't see wind flags with 45 can with 40 !

That's why in Short Range BR, you learn to shoot with both eyes open........monitoring the flags with your "off" eye.
