Lets talk Shotguns

the benelli is inertia driven as where my charles daily was gas driven. I think the gas driven tends to take out a lot of the recoil and keeps it smoother making for faster follow up shots.... I think...
I shoot shot guns competivly - trap. If your shoulder hurts put a recoil reducer
In the gun. For your sight picture you may need a adjustable comb. To shoot a shotgun good gunfit is a must.10 boxes of shells is nothing to shoot in a day. By the way I shoot kreighoff's in competition.

Started my NSCA career with a Rem 1100, but I couldn't carry enough o'rings to keep it running smooth. Went to a Beretta AL391 for about 5 years, then the A 400 'smurf' blue gun. Got to AA when my left shoulder went out on me and I couldn't track any longer. The Beretta's carried me well.

I shoot trap competitively and go through 25 to 30 thousand shells a year. I shoot k-80s which are a locked breach gun and may shoot as many as a thousand shells a day if I'm in shoot offs. Recoil isn't.a problem if your gun fits. Mercury recoil reducers are no more than added weight. You can accomplish the same with lead in the stock. I use a soft touch recoil system and it helps. If your going to stick with a semi auto you might try a gas operated gun like a Beretta. It will help.

I am going to be the dark horse and suggest something completely different. Since recoil, and reliability, are both issues, I would suggest the Remington Versamax. I have shot many semi-autos and this by far the softest recoil of all. It also has a very simple and robust operating system with a Benelli-style bolt but a short stroke gas piston that is self adjusting and self cleaning.

Both my brother and I have one, and we have shots thousands of rounds through both. They digest every shell from 1 oz target loads to 3.5" heavy stuff without a hiccup. And they run the light stuff with 100% reliability. I have shot hundreds of rounds in a day in complete comfort.

Now Remington doesn't do a lot of stuff right, but this one is pretty solid.

There are these.....https://graco-corp.com/

Kick-eze recoil pads, lengthening the forcing cones, but getting it to fit you is the only real way to help in reducing recoil...

I have a K-80 and a KX-5 for shooting trap, my field guns are Browning 525 O/U shotguns with the stocks hot oil bent to fit me with the Kick-eze pads on them.

I have a 870 12ga., which is the first gun I ever bought, and it`s never going anywhere.

Then I bought a 525 in 20 ga. really great gun, then came the 28 ga. 525, had I bought the 28 ga. first I probably would have never bought the 20 ga. what a sweet thing that 28 ga. is....

I didn`t believe the 28 ga. guy`s, what a fool I was, that thing is sooo light and recoils like a cap gun...Hell, a whole box of shells fits in your vest pocket....try that with a 12 ga.....

I have ran the handicap 27 yds. clean so many times with that 28 ga. it isn't even funny, others don`t think so highly of getting beat by a field gun, but a full choke and 3/4 oz. of shot will get you there....

I`ve owned 4 Benelli`s, good guns but not for me, the people who bought them are happy with them and that`s all that matters.

Good luck, I hope you get it where it needs to be.

Phil.

P.S...Lots of dove, quail and pheasant have folded to that pair of 525`s, I don`t hesitate to grab either of them....

I have 3 Benelli's..

A 12 ga supernova - duck hunting, boat paddle, do it all gun works reliably every time..

I have a 20ga ultralight semi auto thats my wifes she loves it.

And I have a silver monefeltro 12ga - dove hunting and shooting sporting clays and skeet every once and a while..

Ill admit up front I had a ol cheap semi auto charles daily from walmart once upon a time and I could put the HAMMER DOWN with that thing, I mean whoop up on ya shooting skeet, hunting and all... I cant shoot as good with the benelli's but they are more reliable. I wore out that charles daily and threw it away it got shot so much... I could and did shoot cases of shells through it a day, no problem.

With my monefeltro I can dove hunt easily with it, limit out no prob, shoot it no problem... Its fine for hunting, BUT after a box of shells through it I just hurt in the shoulder so bad. I cant fit it right to me.. Ive tried the different stock shims to adjust the stock at different angles and just cant get it feeling right...

I love benelli, I'm wondering if a super sport or cordoba 12 ga may be better? They have ported barrels, more rubber/carbon fiber and may recoil less as they are made for skeet and or tons of shooting...

Whats yalls thoughts?

I shoot a Beretta A400 Xcel with a kickoff stock. It is the lightest recoiling 12 ga. I have ever shot. The Benelli's are great guns, but will recoil more than gas guns. You need to look at the weight of your gun, a light gun will kick more. Adding some weight will help.

Install a Limbsaver recoil pad on the Benelli. I have both Benelli and Beretta shotguns and can tell no difference as long as the Benelli wears a Limbsaver!!!!!!

Fit is King in shotgun shooting. Once you are fit correctly and you have the mounting down, the gun will become a natural extension of your eye and you will not longer need to look at a rib or bead.

I have over three dozen shotguns, some of them cover 4 gauges, 12/20/28 and .410 including Barrel Sets K-80 / Browning / Beretta, Carrier Barrel Set K-80 and Tube Sets CG. Three Barrel Set - SKB 20/28&.410, 2 Barrel Set Browning Unsingle Trap Combo and SKB 28/.410 SxS etc. Of course, had to have a 16 gauge in every style too.

Yep, I shoot mostly competitive skeet, but I do shoot Trap, Bunker Trap, Wobble Trap, FITASC, 5 Stand and Sporting Clays and then there is Pump Day, Side By Side Day, Classic Day etc. Can never have enough Shotguns. We even shot once a month with Thompson Contenders with 45 Long Colt Barrels and .410 shells.

You can add to, stir, and remove from the Chinese alphabet soup for as long as you want to. If the gun doesn't fit you, you are wasting your time and money.

Your cheek may be too fat or the comb on your gun may need to be cut down to avoid pounding your cheek.

I think the inertia system of the Montrefeltro is reliable but it sucks otherwise. I think is is more a marketing gimmick than anything else. It does little to soften recoil so you might as well use a pump or OU.
I am a long time skeet shooter and I have never seen a competitor with one. I am not sure that I have even seen a casual shooter with one. I shot pumps, gas guns and OUs in skeet. Most used was a never fail Win Super X-1. The original version from the 1980s.
The Super X is heavy and is a gas gun so it is soft recoiling. Over nearly 2 decades my arms learned to absorb the recoil and recoil bothers me less now but a busy day can give you some arm fatigue.

So far as I know the guns that take a beating the best are the Beretta gas guns that are loaned to dove hunters in Argentina.
The shooters endurance is the only limit those guns see. 800 to 1000 birds a day are usually possible.

You need to shoot registered trap if you're capable of running consistent 25s from the back fence with a 28 gauge. You'll make some pretty good money. I know of no shooters using one in competition.

I shot AA/27 10 years back, or so....not so big on doubles.

Life got in the way and now I only shoot for a little fun and to warm up for birds.

I really enjoyed it, but no time or money for it at that level any more...

I love to shoot sporting clays. I've been competing now for about 17 years. I normally shoot a Blaser F3 Luxus. Shooting rifles is a getaway for me. I get a little burned out now and then with my shotgun. When that happens, out comes the rifle. It's more relaxing to me than shooting my shotgun.
I'm shooting a sporting clays competition this weekend in Sonora Tx. at the JL Bar ranch. They also have a 1500 yard rifle range I'm told. I may take my rifle with me too. Several buddies are going and taking their rifles to try out at longer range.
