Lets see those hunting rifles

Alex,

Do gas guns count? I am about finished re-barreling my feral hog gun, a M14 type. Had to turn the barrel from a blank, what a pain. It is optics only suppressed rifle using a clone Navy SSR scope mount. The scope, not yet shown, is a NF 2.5-10. The first picture shows the SSR front ring, sandwiched between the receiver and barrel, as I check headspace with it. Another picture shows the barreled receiver chucked up between spiders so I can time the Surefire brake/suppressor adapter for their FA762SS can.

The Jet 1024 has a very short spindle.

Will test it in a couple of days. No reloads for ammo, just plain GI M118 LR with the 175 SMKs. I am hoping the barrel would like them, because the bore is super tight, it took a 0.2986 bushing at the breech end 0.02984 at the muzzle.

My buddy and I got one cow elk so far this year (extra B tag) and I found two nice dead heads while packing it out. I called the elk into 30 yards for him to make the shot. When I went to get the bike/trailer and was walking it to the downed elk, I saw a whitetail dead head. As I was picking it up, more antlers caught my eye and there was another mulie dead head lying in the same meadow only 20 feet away! CRAZY!

With the elk mostly boned and put on the bike trailer along with the dead heads and my pack/bow, it made for the easiest pack out ever :)

As for the rifle I will be using for hunting this fall, photos and specs can be found at the following link:

Will try post more photos as the season goes on.

Alex: How about a picture of your hunting rig? With all the choices at your disposal why that set up? Don't hunt elk but wanted to learn the reasons as an intellectual curiosity. Thanks,

Al this is my heavy gun. Everyone has an opinion on this but I prefer a large 30 to a 338 and a heavy barrel if you are going to be taking longer shots. Its got a couple barrels but is wearing a 300 Norma improved right now. Its a Bat HR in a Mcmillan A3 with a Jewell trigger.

If I could only have one elk rifle it would be very close to this one though. Its a Bat Hr, Mcmillan hunter, and a Krieger #5 in 30 nosler.

Here are two of my "build's"...a pre-64 Winchester 70 in 280AI. It has a Zeiss Victory HT scope, a Bartlein barrel, Mcmillan Hunter stock and Timney trigger. The bottom one is a Remington Model Seven in 7mm-08. It has a Vortex Razor LH scope, Calvin Elite trigger, HS Precision stock and Pac-Nor #1 contour barrel. 2 builds.JPG

Here's one of my favorites. Not much of a build. Just a factory Thompson Center Venture rifle with a custom Shilen 26" barrel chambered in 6.5mm Remington Magnum. Only other modification to the rifle besides the barrel is I opened the channel for the heavier #5 barrel contour and bedded the action to the stock.

Dont need to do much to the TC Ventures to get them shooting. Even the factory barrels shoot extremely well. A LOT of animals have fallen victim to my 6.5 Rem Mag. Scope is a Zeiss HD5 5-25x50.

Here's two. Middle is a 338 Lapua AI, Stiller Tac 338 single shot action, McM A5 flattop I had laying around and Jewel trigger. Just put this together last month from parts sitting in the safe for the last 7 years.

Bottom one is a 7mm Dakota with a used barrel and old 700 action and a takeoff high tech specialties stock I stole off a 338-06 I had.

They both get a trip to CO next week as a cross canyon rifle and a carry rifle.

338 is shooting 300 Berger’s and I’m trying the 165 TGK Sierra in the Dakota.

My 338 Lap Imp is a beautiful full custom built on a BAT HRPIC and my 30-338 Lap Imp is a semi custom built on a Rem 700 and for some reason, I like the 30-338 better, but I've always been a fan of big 30's. This is an old pic of the 30-338Lap Imp and since this pic it has had an adj cheek piece installed and has been Cerakoted Titanium. The wood stocked gun is a 7mm Blaser mag. and the bottom pic is 6.5-284 which is one of my all time favs.

This time of year Im spending most of my free time tuning up my rifles for elk season. I think we need a good hunting rifle build thread to help guys get ideas. Post up some pictures, specs, targets, and kills!
