Lesson learned!

I was rushed, getting ready for a 400 yard "deer shoot" the other weekend.
Planned rifle was my custom Mauser in 284 Win.
Even though in hunter class, max power allowed to use is 10 power, i was mounting my 4-20X50 Sightron STAC on the night before. Just had to keep it at 10 power, but figured the 50mm objective & 30mm tube would help.

Got to range & went to sight in. Felt rushed. Began by forgetting to dial scope for 400 yards.

Then rifle wouldn't hold consistancy. Shooting all over the place.

I ended up not shooting the match.

Last night put new stock on my wifes rifle, and decided to put the STAC on it.
When i went to loosen the rings from the base i discovered they were already loose.
In my rush, i forgot to tighten the rings to the base. They were just finger snug.

Lesson, dont rush things the night before a match!

Non-competition post here:

I was asked to help a shooter "with a problem" (at which point the volunteer RSO walked off - no explanation.) So the guy with a scoped AR-15 (who had been shooting for over an hour, probably close to a hundred rounds) says he can't get it to hit paper (21" x 24" target at 100 yds.) No problem. Break it apart, pull the bolt, block the rifle so it's looking at the target, adjust so I can see the target through the bore, check the scope, and... Nothing. Can't see a thing. Look a little closer, and he's got his scope mounted backwards. "You do know these things are supposed to magnify what's down range, right?"

A few years ago when I switched from mainly shooting hunting and varmint rifles, my first time out with my new long range rig. Was working my working my way out to 600 yards from 300 hundred. My first side focus scope and the further out I got the fuzzier the targets got. My solution was to dial the power down. At 600 I was at 10 power. Didn't realize my mistake until I got home. It wasn't my first mistake and won't be the last.

It happens to all of us at some point.

Sorry for not making it to the match on Saturday, Jeffppc.
Had to work full shift on Friday. Got home just after 3am. Fell asleep about 4:30am.
I wasn't about to wake at 7:30am, drive an hour, shoot, then drive an hour home on 3 hours of sleep.
