Less tempiture sensative powder

I hope someone can help me out with this. Have a .284 win shooting Berger 180vld hybrid with h4831sc and it seams very sensitive to temperature change. 10 degree makes a big difference .150 group to somewhere around .750. And yes it just takes a powder change to get it back to tune. If i shoot loads tuned for a certain temp it groups great and it repeats. So what is the problem? I am looking for a suggestion for maybe a powder that would be less temp sensitive. The current load the bullet is .010 off the lands does seating depth affect the sensitivity of this at all? Would it be better to be off the lands more or less to help with this problem? Thanks for the help.....

try Alliant Reloder 15. it was designed for the U.S. military to lessen the effect of temperature change and reduce the copper in the barrel.
I,m not sure how it does with temperature change but it definitely does reduce or eliminate copper in the barrel.
if you do experiment with it let me know how it preforms in different temperatures.
I use it in a few of my rifles and it works very well, especially in my .223.

Not sure 8208 will work in a .284 with heavy bullets?

Maybe something like H4350?
That would be closer to the burn rate of your current powder.

Bert,

I've found that some of the temperature sensitivity of my Varget loads was from the primers. BR-2's aren't bad, but the Tulas are a little better that way.

I would suggest taking a hard look at your load also. Going form 1's to 7's due to temp change says to me that the load isn't in the happy spot. I recently found a load that shot really well in one condition, but change anything and it went away. Most simply, the ammunition consistency helped give me the false indication of in node when, in fact, I was a full grain off.

I also know some really good long range shooters using the straight 284 with H4350 - that might just be your answer.

My 25-06 always loved H4831 (not SC) and seemed consistent with it regardless of the temperature. RL-22 was much more temperature sensitive. H4350 also seemed insensitive to temperature and is my favorite powder in 30-06 both in the field and in the lab for excellent consistency. I've been shooting H1000 in my 6.5-284, 300 WM, and 25-06 lately and things are rolling along well, though I have yet to shoot all the loads in all seasons. H1000 was chosen by the NSWC Crane for the Navy's 300 Win Mag sniper load due to its temperature insensitivity.

If I had to bet on one powder for temperature insensitivity it would be H4350. We've done a lot of armor testing where we need to hold the velocity pretty tight to a specification, and H4350 was the "go to" powder for that and I have many, many shots on armor plus hundreds of shots either at the range or on deer/groundhogs/coyotes with H4350 in a 30-06 behind a 165-168 grain bullet in all seasons.
