Length of pull

cncmill

Erick Crouthamel (Crouthamel Precision)
On your benchrest stocks, do you like the same length of pull (trigger to back of stock) dimension as your hunting rifle or do you prefer it longer or shorter and why? I tend to have mine longer and sometimes think it would be easier to keep correct form with it shorter.

In my own experience, I ended up with shorter LOP because of weight, balance & scope mounting considerations. My BR stocks have 13.5" LOP, but YMMV because of personal taste/needs. BTW, I shot free recoil & I think your style of shooting enters in here also. Hope that helps a little. Joe

I'm with Joe. I use a short LOP because it allows me to shoot with my shoulders parallel to the firing line. This is important as far as I'm concerned because the rifle will recoil straight back. With your shoulders at an angle to the firing line the rifle recoils and the butt stock deflects to the right for a right hander and the scope and muzzle end up left of point of impact. The bags get disturbed and this is not good as it takes longer to get the next shot off.

Thanks for the help. I am going to try shortening one of my stocks and see if it makes a difference.

Trust me, I`m NOOOOO expert at this, but I shoot longer LOP on my rifles.

My Krieghoff Trap guns have 15.125" LOP. right now my stuff is at 14", but could go longer if necessary.

I think 14.5" LOP. may be where I settle.

I believe, like many things it`s personal and subjective to the user, we all prefer things a little different.....Blondes, Brunettes, Red Heads.......Etc.

So Phil, not to argue or find fault in your preference in LOP in a rifle, I have a couple questions. Are you using these or this rifle in a "benchrest rifle" manner? Are your rifles set up for hunting and off hand shooting or for target shooting and presumably from a front rest and bag or bags? Can I assume you've tried longer and shorter on the same rifle? Is this in all kinds of weather where a jacket or heavy coat can throw all else out of whack? My answer and I would say Joe Entrekin's answer were for Benchrest rifles.

Currently my 14" LOP is for a benchrest set up, front rest / rear bag.

I am in the process of trying longer LOP`s as the shorter aren`t comfortable for me, i feel like i`m climbing all over the rifle.

I always compromise twords the shorter LOP for shooting with a jacket, it would be too uncomfortable to have the correct LOP and then have to wear a jacket.

This is why i`m starting at 14" with this one and going in .250" increments longer to see how it feels.

Phil.

When I was shooting trap, I never shot decently till I got a stock that gave me 16 1/4" LOP. For my F/TR rig, it sits at 14 3/4". I like a long stock but that's just me.
