Left hand twist barrels?

In 20 years of IBS VFS competition that's been my experience too, Tim. It's appears to be about 1/3 to 1/2 more movement than right-to-left. Also, every one of these charts shows a headwind (from 12 o'clock) causing the bullet to drop, and a tailwind (from 6 o'clock) making it rise. I've found it to be just the opposite.

I agree on the head and tail wind
Glad I’m not crazy on the green!

It seems to me like I have had a hard time dealing with a stiff left to right green flag push. I just can’t get a tune that doesn’t seem to move twice as far as a red condition of the same intensity

Is it in my imagination? I don’t think so at 100-200 yards it seems the right twist barrel will move more with the wind from left to right

Tim, Look at the attachment. Maybe this will help a little. The sketch to me is on the extreme side of what it is showing but it should give you an idea.

That makes sense
It just seems the bullet spin fighting into the wind doesn't get moved as much as spinning with the wind
I may have to try it now that I know you make em!

Thanks for your time

So if you match shoot you should have 2 identical rifles one with a left twist and one with a right. Then when you get to the range and see which direction the wind is blowing, you will know which rifle to shoot?????

Absolutely! And the wind never changes

I have been reading up on this but still not sure what to believe? Can anyone out there enlighten me as to the real reason for left twist?
Hi mate,
I use two Bartleins .308 30" 1/11t 5R left twist in my competition palma rifle. Currently I have 2 indexed switch barrel and another 2 blanks on order.
If you're a left handed shooter, it will improve your shot release and therefore your group sizes and consistency.
What is different is that the rifle torques into your position. Like as if you had a right twist barrel and you were a right handed shooter.
The barrel must be torqued to specifications and it won't unscrew itself due to firing torque (in case you're wondering about this, I can put your mind at ease).
As for other effects (spin drift etc). Since moving to these left twist barrels, I only notice that at 1000y my wind zero doesn't move 1 moa right anymore. It stays the same as the 300y wind zero. I've got no explanation for this.

Thanks great info, but wouldn't a left twist (counter clockwise) torque away from a left hand shooter? I'm probably missing something so correct me if I'm wrong

A left twist torques into the right (clockwise). A right twist torques left (counter clockwise).
Newton's law. To each action there is an equal opposite reaction.
I've checked this fact both by shooting sling and irons and by shooting off a bag and Harris bipod.

Afew years ago I was told the real reason for the left hand twist and the true great advatage they offer; your bore brush will not unscrew from the rod while cleaning the barrel. This was why a shooter who was shooting a left hand twist barrel and who was sitting 41st out of 42 shooters, could still look smug while cleaning his rifle. WH

I agree that more testing is needed. Please order barrels from Mark Chanlynn. His barrels kick ass. Don't bug him with lots of questions, he is a busy man.

So a typical right twist barrel will tend to compress which side of a front bag?

Hi mate, a typical right twist barrel will compress the LEFT side of the front bag. I am still trying to find a way to measure by how much in newtons.
Confused a bit here, so if it compresses left side of bag why am I shooting to the right

Hi mate,
What is the setup that you're using? Are you positive that your rifle barrel is right twist?
I shot today an f class rifle off a SEB pedestal stand and the rifle did torque clearly to the left (counter clockwise). Also the muzzle jumped to the left 2 targets at 900y.
