Learning to use mils.

Alec, they are fairly simple to learn to use. I have a Leupold with a Premier Reticle in it which is Moa turrets and Mil-Dot reticle that I learned on. A buddy of mine spent the day with me, side by side shooting various ranges shooling me. By the end of the day I was ranging targets and getting within several yards of the actual distance. Shortly after I bought a 5-20 SS HD which is Mil-Mil that I believe is even easier. See if you can find a shooter that would be willing to do the same for you.

I like you, was an MOA guy until I used my buddy's mil scope at 600 yards. If you miss by .3 mils right due to the wind, hold .3 mils left to hit center mass. It is really easy to use especially if you have .5 and
Mil marks on the reticle like my G2DMR from Bushnell.

Why won't it also work with MOA? Miss .5 right, aim .5 left.

An easy way to get your brain on the mils from heavy MOA use...

Think of each .1 mil click as 1/3 MOA click.. It's closer than you can hold to that and you get to use what your used to and with time you will start to see the correlation and transition to the .1 mil, and therefor mils without really thinking about it. Worked for me. Now I can use both.

Here's the numbers if your scope is true MOA, and your rifle is good for accuracy to .470 in @ 1000 yds, this should be close.. ;)
1/3 = 0.333-
1 MOA @ 100yds = 1.047 in
1 mil @ 100 yds = 3.437 MOA ( 3.59in)
.1 mil @ 100 yds = .343 MOA ( .359 in)

So you will be .010 MOA wrong by thinking in 1/3'ds or roughly .0095 in @100 yds... But... And here is the catch... Real MOA @ 100 yds using 1/4 MOA click, is actually .261 in. But most everyone accepts .25 in as "close enough" so 1 MOA @ 100 yds is 1 in. to be easy, etc.. But that makes you .011 MOA wrong, so actually using .1 mil as a 1/3 MOA click is more accurate... ;)

You're right Erik, there is no difference either way.
IMO, while laser ranging, there is zero advantage in MILs and FFP, over any other system in SFP.

This is just another tactical -vs- practical.

It's an easily relatable hard value that you can use until you get comfortable with Mils. One click is a third of what you already know, sooner than you think, you'll just start thinking one click is one tenth of a mil after seeing the correlation. Just a suggestion to ease the transition if you already know and are comfortable with MOA, but mils seem confusing.
