Lead sleds

I have one. I used it when sighting in a rifle. Not so much when firing, but I used it to hold the rifle when I adjusted the turrets.

Why? Because it holds it dead steady when I'm adjusting the turrets to match impact. Also, because I got it way before I got a decent front rest.

But now that I have decent rests and bags, it never leaves the garage. I should post for sale on my local forum just to make some room.

If you can't take the recoil sighting in, you need to purchase a rifle with recoil that you can handle.
This!

I’ve read on other forums a bunch of times where people are having POI issues and swear it’s the gun or the ammo. Same stuff they’ve been using that has shot well. After numerous questions it turns out they were scope issues and the shooter is using a lead sled! From reticle failures to a wandering POI from shot to shot. And also scopes moving in the rings.

Mostly covered already by others. The rifle needs some “give” or things break. Free recoil shooting aside, I sight in a hunting rifle as close to how I’m going to use it. I hold the gun to my shoulder and grip the stock. Those pressures on the gun are close to how I’ll hold the rifle in the field. My shoulder moves with the recoil, absorbing the pressure a certain way.
Try jumping off a ladder at, say, 6 feet off the ground. Naturally, your knees will bend to absorb the shock of hitting the ground. Now, think about doing that with your legs locked straight as you hit the ground. Don’t do it, because something is going to break!

Yes, I have personally witnessed all of these undesirable effects over the past several years at the range.

The more I can free recoil off the bench the tighter my rifle shoots. I know you cant free recoil with a sporter but take as much torque off the stock as you can.. I need a rest and a bag for that. Doug

Curiosity question : has anyone tried one of these contraptions? Picked one up cheap in a garage sale a few years ago but I've never tried to use it. Has a pair of shock absorbers and recoils on rails and pillow block bearings.

Interesting idea but as I said, I've never tried it so don't know if it's worth a spit or not.Screenshot_20231024_104213_Chrome.jpg

When teaching a shooter I explain that the rifle needs to recoil straight back or the point of impact will be affected, just like shooting pool.... if the que stick is not stroked straight in line it will induce a spin on the ball. A lead sled doesn't allow any recoil so it is going to throw the shot somewhere.

Never even seen one before, what's it called? Since it allows free rearward movement it shouldn't have the negative affects of a traditional lead sled. Could be good for sighting a scope.

Made by a company called Hyskore. I don't know the exact model. It's not completely free recoil because it's dampened by the shocks. I've never tried using it because I didn't want to take the time to set it up at a public range. Even came with a plunger mechanism to operate the trigger without touching the rifle.

So ,guy on another forum I'm on is having problems with a gun he bought, apparently customer Service told him shooting it off his lead sled might be part of the problem. Said he don't get how it could be a problem. Mention led alot of guys in the precision game hate lead sleds and apparently they can cause some issues but I want an expert on the subject just what Ive seen peoel way more advanced then me say.
Think somone could explain why lead sleds and similar could cause problems?
( btw most of these guys are just the your average hunter types , not trying to make fun of anyone or anything just the audience)
They are not good for scopes at all.
