Lead head guys, little help?

snert

I am playing with a 30 Herrett in a Contender. I would like a beginning load (plinking at 25, 50 and 100 yards) for a 30 caliber 117 grain coated lead bullet. This is basically a 30 carbine bullet. Any suggestions? I do not have a Lyman book.

TIA,
snert

I have a speer and Hornady manuals...w 110gr jacketed bullet max is 21.5 of 2400... Which is the only powder I'd start with in a manual. My Lyman is too old for the herrett cartridge.
In my tc .25-20 barrel I use 3gr 231 but I got loads like that from 35 Remington on the Marlin site
FWIW they list within a grn in 30-30 contender.
2400 works well w cast bullets but sounds like you want something less.

this is the load data from the RCBS cast bullet manual. it is the only load data I have for a bullet that light in the 30 herrett.

Not knowing the length of your barrel or what powder you want to use, I will throw this out there.

117 gn Lyman LFN GC
10" Contender barrel
Red Dot Powder
COAL 2.00"

Per Quick Load, velocity is 1133 fps and chamber psi is 15,894 for 5.0 gn RD.
Per Quick Load, velocity is 1011 fps and chamber psi is 11,357 for 4.0 gn RD.
