LC Match 30-06 Brass

Okay guys, educate me.

I have 160 pieces of once fired LC 68 Match Brass in 30-06. Do I have anything that is significant to anyone or is this just another batch of military brass to be thrown in with the other mil surplus brass.

I know that some prefer certain LC lots when working up rounds for their 5.56s and 223s as well as for their 308s. I've been told that is because the LC brass is the "best" and can take higher pressures...yada yada yada. Is this true with the 30-06 LC brass? Any significance that it is "match" brass?

I am looking forward to learning about what I have and advice on what I should do with it. Thanks
Scott

LC brass in 30-06 is second only to Lapua and would serve well for hunting or target shooting in a bolt action. There aren't many folks shooting 30-06 in matches any more.

In the 1960s Lake City produced high quality match ammo. Some of the most accurate lots of 30-06 and 7.62 M118 were produced during this time. Part of that was the consistency of the brass. So I wouldn't toss it in with the bulk of your surplus brass. If you have a M1 load it for your long distance matches. The quantity you have should be able to give you nearly 1000 shots downrange with annealing.

Thanks for the responses...just what I needed to know. I just picked up a 270 that I plan to be my "go to" hunting rifle. Maybe this brass needs to be necked down and dedicated to this new toy.
Off the top of my head, do you see any problems necking them down...will they be long enough?

Thanks
Scott

During the early '60's at the AMU we shot both LC and FA out of machine rests from 600 yards and the ammo would hold 4" ten round groups!

Was damn good ammo!

There is .051" difference in length between the 30/06 and 270 case. necking the 30/06 case down will cause the case to get longer. I avoid cases that do not cover the chamber.

When using 'X' dies it is recommended the case be trimmed .020".

Hey Scott, I know I'm a little late on this post but if you haven't decided already what to do with this brass, I'd be interested in it if you wanted to sell it.
I've got some of this brass and would like to add a few more pieces as they come available.

If you have min dimension chamber and dies that don't overwork the cases on sizing LC Match will last many years. I have 500 rounds of LC brass dedicated to one rifle. The brass is now on its third barrel with no signs of deterrioration.
I did a sustained loading test on a LC66 Match 30.06 case and I loaded it 157 times and the primer pocket is still snug.
