Lawton Machineworks

I saw the advertising banner for Lawton actions and barrels. Dave Kiff told me about Cody Finch's shooting. Yesterday, I sent an e-mail to Lawton. I promptly got a reply. On my way home yesterday I decided to called them. I spoke to a gentleman who worked there for about 20 minutes. I have never made a rifled barrel, but I would say that I am fairly well read on the topic. I have turned, threaded, crowned, installed and head spaced my share of barrels over the last 35 years. I have never used a Lawton barrel so I can't speak about their quality personally. After my conversation yesterday I am going to recommend for one of my cut rifling customers to try a Lawton Barrel.

I will say the gentleman I spoke with was knowledgeable both about barrel making and the equipment used in barrel making. We talked about the Lawton Actions as well. I was impressed with what I heard. He indicated on some of the more common size and calibers they had barrels in stock. He indicated that their barrel orders were in and out of the door in a matter of a couple of weeks.

I have used several other cut rifling barrel makers barrels over the years. Most have been very high quality barrels and real shooters. They all have a common denominator, delivery time from 10-weeks to two years.

I like competition and there are several new cut rifling barrel makers currently in business. They are hungry for their niche in the market. If their quality remains, they all have a bright future in the barrel making business.

There are several high quality button rifling barrel makers in the market today. Several appear to be shining over the rest. Quality barrels and superior service make them very appealing.

We as gunsmith and shooters have a lot of choices available to us today. I was at a match a couple of weeks ago and it was said the equipment has gotten so good that long range shooting has come down to who can best read the wind.

Just wanted to say it was a pleasure reading about and talking with the folks at Lawton Machine. With good shooting barrels and customer service like I received yesterday you should do well.

I have never seleceted a barrel based solely on the number of grooves. I have shot 03A3 Springfields with 2 grooves that would shoot well. I have shot microgroove Marlins that shot well. I know Dan Lija makes some fine 3 groove barrels. I know Tim North makes some fine 5 groove canted rifling barrels. I have read articles that go each direction. I don't think barrels can be judges on number of lands and grooves. I don't think there is an accuracy difference between cut or button barrels.

I would have to take each situation and barrel on an individual basis.

Hey Nat,
I've been here longer than 20min. ha ha
No, realy, it was a pleasure to talk with you, and thanks for the post.
We cut from 6mm to .408 in either 6 or 8 groove. You can choose from 8" to 72" twist in 1/4" increments. SS or CM. We have a bunch on the shelf and if we don't have it already, we can work one up in short order.
Don't forget our actions either.
Go to www.lawtonriflebarrels.com and have a look, then you may want to give Barney a call at 406-683-2388.
Thanks again and I hope to talk with you again soon.

Ha! Good one Scott.
Are you folks working on any of the variations of the 'canted' land barrels that are popular with the Lr shooters.
cheers,
-lige

gaintwist,
No. We don't offer anything in the "canted, ratchet, or C" configurations. Nore do we offer anything like your namesake, "gaintwist".
We here at Lawton Machine LLC/Lawton Rifle Barrels produce cut rifled barrels to very high and strict standards. We do not "mass produce" our products. We try to produce the best possible product in a timely manner.
Thanks.

Scott,
I guess this is an old question but since Lawton does offer ss and chrome moly bbls and you are a shooter/machinest I thought you might have some personal insight/experience.....

How would you compare ss and chrome moly bbls of the same caliber/twist configuration?

thanks again,
-lige
