Lathe value ?

Hi all,
I know this may be off topic but I’m hoping I can get get an approximate value of a lathe. My dad is getting up in age and has decided to get rid of the last of his machines. It’s a Logan and I believe it’s a 9 - 36
I don’t know anything about them, my dad was a machinist and then an industrial engineer but he is past using this and we figure it’s better to get rid of it now while he can still tell a buyer what it is along with all the tooling that would probably go with it.
Just don’t want to see him sell it all for $100 if it’s worth $5000. LOL (remember, he is up in age).

(I know it would be nice if I would learn how to use it but I’m lazy)

No less then $1500. Flea bay has a few with the lower cabinet for
pushing $3500. Accessory's like 4 jaw chuck, collets and face plate,
steady rest ?? It really helps the value. The only one of these I have
ever seen was being used with a taper attachment. Is that the 4 jaw
I see on the floor ?? Looks in decent shape and cared for.

I’m not sure exactly what and how many but I’m reasonably sure that a fair amount of tooling will go with it. He wouldn’t be wanting to nickle and dime for each part.
When he bought it about 40 some years ago, he tore it down and rebuilt it. Well cared for, it was in his basement for hobbies and making parts for friends.
It’s in Maryland if anyone knows anyone that would be interested.

He has a 3 jaw and 4 jaw chuck, collets, one steady rest, miscellaneous stuff.

IMO this wouldn't be a good choice for most people getting into gunsmithing
It is nice for sure
If you found someone looking for this size machine maybe $1200 to $1500
I'm not too sure there will be a lot of interest in it

He made a couple civil war replicas to scale.
There’s absolutely nothing on them that wasn’t made by him. The links on the chain, the wheels, hand carved the spokes, etc.
He used to shoot them on the 4th of July!
Not a good picture, I just zoomed in on what I had. I think he sent away for the plans back in the 70’s or 80’s.

I would want at least 1.2"spindle bore through the headstock if you want to do barrels. I know that you could get by with a smaller bore Im just saying for me I wouldnt want to do have the small spindle bore. Looks like a nice machine In this area 1000 - 1500 is what they fetch

Try the hobby machine forums like practical machinist. Logan is a good lathe and there will be interest in it like from the model railroad guys

In reflection to Dusty's post, try the local DIY shops. They may want to be interested and pick it up at the same.

My oldest brother, (he is 78) has a Logan just like that In his home shop. I agree with Tim in post #7, that is really not a good lathe to do barrel work, considering how that craft has evolved in past decades.

But for other small lathe work for a hobby, it is perfectly fine. Heck, that Aloris tool post is not cheap.

That is a nice lathe and looks to be well set up. Problem is the guy who would LOVE to have it is probably 10 hours away and not reading this forum… Like a lot of things… it’s worth EXACTLY what someone is willing to pay (and come pick up) and not a penny more. I have a friend who picked up a really nice Atlas about the same size and condition for next to nothing, completely went through it and has been trying to give it to me… problem is, I have neither the place or willingness to learn to use it properly and even at that would only have a use for it every few years… Good luck with it.
