Lathe Dog

Does anyone make or sell a lathe dog other than those big clunky cast iron versions, like a aluminum one or the like.

Dean

I am not aware of any commercially available aluminum dogs. Whats wrong with the cast? Aluminum probably isn't the best material for a lathe dog anyhow. If you absolutely need aluminum ones, why not make them?

All I am doing is Profiling so the cast ones are fine, like I said I was just wondering if there was something with a more machined look.

Just buy one of the cast iron ones. Draw file it down to as smooth as you can, then take it to the buffer and polish it up nice, so it shines like it was chromed ! Oil it up, so it doesn't rust,,, or better yet Ceracoat it !

This is what happens when you hang around mills and lathes, you think everything should have the machined or billet look, that raw castings stuff just don't cut it anymore.o_O:confused::D

I agree but if you started out on leftover machines from World War Two like I did, you soon learned looks didn't equate to function and capability.
Now, we're in to pretty painted and polished machines that stall if you just stand there and THINK about taking a heavy cut, ultra clean shops, and "operators".:p

Those heavy, rigid old machines had lots of that "ugly ol' cast iron" in them. With a brass tag rivited on in a conspicious place that said "US GOVERNMENT PROPERTY" "War Production Board" with a bunch of numbers imprinted on it, whos' meaning has long since been forgotton. That kinda' discribes my Index vertical mill. Doesn't have overdrive, but just won't stall. She ain't pretty, but she'll do about all the milling I need. Has her limitations but has paid for herself many times over during the past 20yrs. I've owned her. Lots of cast iron there! Made long before foundries were deemed to be "too dirty" for the USA environment.
