Laser Boresighter

What is the best laser boresighter for a .223? I can't use the ones that go in the chamber, because with a 24" barrel, the dot gets blurred. I can't use my one that goes in the barrel end, because the dot gets too big at 30 feet. There must be one that actually works. Thanks.

Go old school. Forget the boresighter. Remove the bolt or bolt carrier and look down the bore at a large bull down range. Put the rifle securely on bags or a rest and try not to bump it when you look down the bore. Carefully align the bull so it's perfectly concentric in the bore. Adjust the scope so it's centered on the bull when the bore is. You'll be on paper and should be darn close to center.

As you see, I have no use for boresighters! (or automatic transmissions for the matter) I like simple!

I did this, very carefully. It looked perfect. Still hit high. Very high, like eighteen inches. The target when boresighting was right in the center, perfect. Do not understand this. I freely admit it could be operator error, but what? What?

If you are laser bore sighting indoors at very short range your reticle crosshairs should be above the projected dot (on the wall) due to the scope height being above the bore. Do you have a scope rail with inclination/cant? That will further exacerbate the situation.
Experiment, Get sighted in at 50 yards, record that and then check your difference back home on the wall with the laser. Record that diff for future reference.

When I use my in chamber laser bore sighter, I do it in the basement at about 15'. I slightly move the unit in the chamber until there is a perfect laser dot on the wall. Than the reticle is moved to straight above the laser dot, the same amount as the optic reticle is above the center of the bore. A target at 50 yards will be within a couple inches or use 25 yards for a test shot.

Thanks. Helpful. Got it.

This ^^^^^^^^. I boresight at 100yds. Rarely is it more than 4 or 5 inches off center if that much. It makes for a 2 shot zero. The key is having the rifle SOLID.

usually i use a mark 1 eyeball, but i have used a bore sighter made to stick in the muzzle by removing the bolt and laying it in the action. with some maneuvering it will shine down the barrel enough to do the job. it was really handy to sight across an optical chronograph.
