large shank threads to small shank threads

is it possible for a gunsmith to turn the threads of a large shank savage barrel down to a small shank without cutting the barrel off and rethreading? also keeping the same angle of the threads.

I believe when you do the machining you will find there is a .0625" difference. 1.1/16" = 1.0625" and 1 1/8 =1.125" The threads on 20tpi are approximately .055"-.057" deep if cut to a 2B fit.

Very do able. And I wouldn't sweat to much over the difference of .0025" on those threads. :D

Here's some examples of putting dual threads on a barrel to retain the "heavier" barrel for a small shank action. I've done a bunch of these and they all have turned out good. Most smiths should be able to do it....if you can talk them into doing something "different". :D

Good advice from everyone. As far as the .0025" different in crest height......well, a touch of emery to take the "sharp" off of'em won't make one iota's difference. What? One and a quarter thou difference per side?

As a side note.......google up thread failure and get a cup of coffee. It is a very interesting topic.

We built machines that would clamp onto a stud, stretch it "X amount" and have the torque applied to the nut then released. This at Charleston Naval Shipyard for certain submarine hatches. The "good ol' days before they axed us. We were ahead of schedule and under cost for the last two submarines - made not one bit of difference. But, I digress.................

That is some pretty work Randy. Really nice.
