Large primer case to Small primer case, what should I know?

I've been loading for a 219 Wasp, the brass was formed from 219 Zipper and 30-30 Win, both large primer.

Now I have some 219 Wasp brass formed from Federal 30 American brass - small primer.

My guess is the small primer would give lower pressures. I would like to know what I should be concerned with.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I form 6mm SWM from 6.5x47 lapua resulting in a small primer pocket as opposed to the regular large. This results in me being able to load higher charges and get extra velocity with no pressure signs, I cannot vouch for .219 wasp however. Just start at the minimum charge and work up until you feel that pressure is too great. A ladder test would be perfect, a comparison between both small and large would be interesting.

I couldn't find any difference in 6.8mm Rem SPC between Hornady small primer and R-P large primer brass in either loads or MVs (or spreads either for that matter). I was rather disappointed by that to be honest.

In 308 Win, the small primer Lapua Palma cases usually need around another 0.4 to 0.5gn powder to produce the same MVs as equivalent Lapua LRP brass, but they also have the small (1.5mm / 0.059") flash-hole which affects things rather a lot, and SR primers are close to their usable limit with 45-49gn charges (and don't work at all well with some powders like CFE223).

So with the Wasp lying between this pair, I wouldn't expect much change if any in terms of loads just like pngjasper found. It might reduce your velocity spreads a little, everything else like brass quality being equal. If the Federal 30 cases have a significantly different capacity after reforming from the other pair, that would make a greater difference to the results than the primer type change. If the case-heads are equally thick and have similar brass alloy and hardness characteristics, I'd expect the small primer ones to last longer before the pockets expand to give a slack fit.

( I'd expect the small primer ones to last longer before the pockets expand to give a slack fit.)

A definite advantage.;)

Rem 7 1/2s and WSR's will fit in the new brass. These are my "go-to" primers in that size case. Should see your SD and ES go way down.

Steve :)
