large bullets down small holes

Hi, I've heard it is best not to send heavy bullets down barrels. That you should move up to the next caliber. I was wanting to shoot 75-80gr bullets in a 223. Would it be wise to get a 6mm? Thanks

Steve,
Welcome to 6BR and thanks for your post.

I am not sure that there is a right or wrong answer to your question. If you were only going to shoot out to 600 yards, then a fast twist .223 is a great choice.

The 6mm would be more versatile and great 1000 yard round with 105 or 107 grain bullets.

If I were only going to have one I would choose a 6BR with a no turn neck.

Service rifle match shooters using AR-15s are required to chamber them in 223 Remington and the 80 grain Sierra Match King is the most popular bullet for the 600 yard stage of the course of fire. The 75 grain Hornady Amax is the second most popular.

I've shot thousands of 75 grain Amaxes through 1 in 8 and 1 in 7 twist, 20 inch barrels with no ill-effects.

Jeeze, that means I shouldnt have been shooting 80gn bullets in my 223s, 22BRs etc for the last 12 years and 90gn-100gn bullets in 22BRs and BRXs for the last 2 years.
