Lapua vs RWS brass?

We see a lot of RWS 308 Win brass in the UK as the GB NRA has a contract with RUAG to manufacture the cartridge for GB 'Target Rifle' competition and NRA sales at Bisley. The factory load has the original 155gn Sierra MK loaded to somewhere around 2,925-2,925 fps in a 30-inch 'tight' TR barrel with a Palma 95 or Bisley 150 type chamber. It shoots very well.

As the NRA retains all fired brass from major comps that use this stuff as 'issued ammunition', and as many GB TR shooters who buy supplies for other comps don't handload, the resulting large quantities of once-fired cases have been almost a drug on the market and are sold on at what is a bargain price compared to that of new unprimed brass.

In terms of quality and weights/capacities, they're very similar to 308 Lapua. Same neck thickness too. I've had just a 'feeling' they're not as hard as Lapua in the head / web area so a warm load sees expanded primer pockets a loading or two earlier. In terms of results, there's little or nothing between them, and it's more a matter of good and not so good batches. Weights aren't maybe quite as consistent as Lapua, but still very good - but several people I know and trust are saying they think recent Lapua 308 isn't as good as it used to be, anyway.

Otherwise, although we have importers in the UK, RWS is generally bought for cartridges that Lapua doesn't make. Ian Boxall (Elwood on this forum) used RWS 7x57mm brass to reform to a wildcat called the 6mm Crusader two or three seasons back and walked away with our one annual short-range (4 matches at 600 yards) league round shooting it. Ian was full of praise for the brass - very strong too, he said, and he was running some seriously hot loads in the cartridge.

If I can get the calibre I want in RWS, I am more than happy to pay twice what the other brass costs for it. Those I know who use it swear by it. If they would make 6BR, 284 and 300WSM brass, I would be one happy camper (not that I can fault Lapua 6BR brass).
Actually a few years ago RWS decided to run loaded ammo in 300 WSM. It sold for about $80.00 a box and didn't sell. A friend of mine bought all Midway had when they ran a sale at around 30.00 a box or a little cheaper. I don't know if he tried it in his competition guns but know the last 2 years he was hard to beat. I would buy it if they had it. Matt

I've seen the loaded 300 WSM stuff on sale on some European sites, there might still be hope of it coming to the US again.

There is a company in Florida that is trying to become a supplier/distributor of Ruag brass witch is the parent company of RWS. If the deal go's through a lot of things will change!
I just found this out.

If they can get the RWS WSM brass or loaded ammo in then I think they may do well.

$31 per 20 pcs 223 Rem.......?

Better be good stuff.............
You'll reload it more times than any other brass. How much money do you pay for the bullets you shoot only once? And the powder charges used only once? How about the one time use primers? All of a sudden, the RWS brass looks like a pretty good deal eh?

I prefer the RWS to anything else if the make something I can use but I wouldn't say it is better than Lapua in every instance. For example, I don't think the RWS 308 Win brass is stronger than the Lapua 308 Palma brass with the small primer pocket. On the other hand, I have a 7/300WSM where I use RWS 300WSM neck down and I can use an extra grain and a half of powder into the load for the same amount of extractor groove expansion as Norma. I am still using the same 500 cases I started with 4 years ago and I have shot it a lot. I am now playing around with a 280Ackley based on the 30-06 Lapua brass and those cases have held up well, but I have 240 pieces of RWS 280Rem brass that will be used once I get the 280AI settled in. I have also used the RWS 7X64 Brenneke brass with excellent results. I wish they made the stuff in more cartridges. As far as economy is concerned, I spend a lot of time prepping and sorting my brass and the extra cost of RWS is well worth it if I can get more reloadings out of it. That said, I shoot what works and I use whatever brass is available for what works best for my purposes.

For a 223 I wouldn't bother with it.....

Maybe not for an AR...

... but suppose it was a really, REALLY good 223 - that was capable of shooting in the 0.2"s or less??

It's still a 223

Hi TonyR,

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but how did the RWS 280Rem brass hold up in your 280AI? I can get the RWS for the same price as Norma brass. Would you say the RWS will handle stout loads better than Norma or Nosler brass?

Thanks!
Gerhard

RWS is good brass. Price is good too...in Europe. That is where I got my last batch of 6.5x50R RWS brass. Traded with someone in Europe and paid the shipping. The price in the U.S. will stay high until someone can import enough to get multiple distributors that compete against each other for the business. If there is no competition, the seller sets the price and the buyers set the market. I am sure that if some of that once fired RWS .308 brass mentioned above hit the market here, it would sell out fast.

Wish I could find some of the RWS that I want....

Steve :)

If you want RWS brass, visit the HDS website.
The RUAG distributor is in Tampa FL, and has been for a long time.

It's quite obvious, you have never used RWS brass ::)
I have Lapua and RWS 30-06 brass. The RWS neck is .013 inch and cleans up consistently at .011 on an IDOD neck turner.. The Lapua neck is .015 thick and requires turning to .011 to clean up. I have also found RWS 50 BMG brass neck wall to be more consistent than Lapua. I plan to get RWS 300 Win Mag and 338 Lapua to evaluate.
