lapping rings

Anyone using the Kokopelli scope ring alignment bars and lapping tool that is advertised on the home page of 6mmbr? Can they be used on both aluminum and steel rings? Looks to be a good product at a resonable price. Your comments appreciated.

I don't know about the Kokopelli lapping tool. I use a Russ Hayden tool myself, both the 1" and 30mm. I use them on both alminum and steel w/o any problems. Be careful on the aluminum though it goes quick. I would suggest using the lapping tool in conjunction with a good ring alignment tool to get everything straight as possible to start with.

Good luck, Joe

Something like the Kokopelli is useful with windage adjustable mounts/rings based on the old Redding design since the alignment of the rings is adjustable. As mentioned the Burris Signature rings with the live inserts eliminates that problem provided thay can hold the scope against recoil. No problem on most chamberings, more so with a very lightweight large magnum.

With the Weaver/picatinny style mounts/rings a lapping bar is all that's needed. I always at least touch the rings up to see if they line up, and if lapping is required it is invariably due to lousy machining on a factory receiver. Like the front and rear mounting holes on a 700 so far out of line a one piece mount would take either the front screws or the rear screws, but not both at once. That took two piece mounts and some serious lapping on the rings.
