Lapping Lugs

hey guys. I have a custom action that I believe is a little stiff. I have seen where people lap the lugs and other parts of the bolt where it contacts. what do they use or is that just on factory 700 or is that something you do when you true one up to smooth them. Or should I just let it wear in thanks

What brand action do you have?
Is it stiff even if you remove firing pin and spring?
Is it stiff on open only or on close as well?

Before tossing a glob of abrasive goop in an action, THINK :)

You might get some machinist's blue and find where it is tight if you really need to know, but I would suggest letting it wear in on it's own.

Please don't do anything , have a GOOD smith look at it. Good luck Steve Bair

im just going to shoot it its not affecting accuracy it shoots great my last one got better with every cycle just curios what you guys thought the action manufacture said they tightened up the tolerences so theres my difference not complaning just feels different

Is this your first custom action? BIG difference between custom and mass produced to fit every brand of ammo actions.

Give it some time, and cycles of the bolt to smooth up. The old lap in the lugs thing was a crude approach to something that would be properly handled as a machining operation. Custom actions are only lapped for finish, not to correct dimensions. I suggest that you do not do any lapping on your new action. Have you taken the striker assembly out of the bolt and lubed the shroud threads and cocking cam? That is always a good place to start. I assume that you have put a thin film of bolt grease on the back surface of the locking lugs. This is not an application for oil.

Please answer these.

Then these...

Is it stiff when empty?
Is it stiff with loaded ammo?
Is it stiff with fired, spent cases?

Unless you are a qualified smith, leave this kind of stuff to the experts.
