Lapping a new and unlapped barrel (edited)

Hello I received a pair of barrel from Shilen, one 4Grooves Ratchet in .223 and other in .224 with 6grooves.
I tried to lap the barrel in the next way:
Using VFG felts http://www.intershoot.co.uk/acatalog/vfg_Items.html ( they are like tampon ) I did 30 strokes with JB compound, Then 60 with bore bright compound by brownells.
But I still feel roughness in the barrel..... Do I need a compound with a coarser grit? or just do more strokes with the same compound?

After 30 strokes wit JB compound and 60 with brownells bore brighter ( in a VFG tampon ) seems to be than nothing happens, just the ratchet barrel is smoother, the other i can hear and feel the in a tight patch the mech marks.

Can we have this again, in English?

hmmm, well long ago I used some bore paste a little bit and i never really noticed any great results...now I’m not saying that it doesn’t work to remedy certain things, but i would exercise some caution in using the bore paste it can also have some negative effects.

If it were me I’d want to have a look at that barrel with a borescope before doing anything....especially if you can "feel" roughness in the barrel.

JB paste will not lap a barrel. You will get "little league elbow" before you notice any change. Lapping is a job best done by those who made the barrel, but some have had luck with fire lapping. If I were you, I would shoot the barrel as is. Good shooting....James

Hello James, I think You are right, the .224 is intended for 22 wmr, in this case a break-in procedure will lap enough, but in the .223 is intended for 22lr where the break in procedure do not work, I think I will get "little league elbow"

Lapping is an art, if you are not and artist, your lapping may do more harm than good. I think this was said politically correctly enough. Lapping needs to be done with a lead slug with lapping compound. Without the rigidness of the lead slug your are not doing much to the bore more than polishing/skuffing it up. Lapping can remove rough places but it can also make loose spots. Suggest you do more research on the lapping process. Ruined barrels can not be fixed.

Thanks for the advice, so with JB and bore bright, still the barrels are quite virgin, I will cast lead to do the process but what is the starting and finish grit recommend? 600 to 2000 is ok?

Most barrel lapping is done with 180, 220, and 400 grit lapping compound. There are two types of lapping compound one is embedding and the other is not. You want to use the non emmbedding compound.
