Lake City M80 in M1A

Hi,
How is the Federal Lake City XM80C for shooting out of a loaded M1A? I am not looking to shoot long range precision. I am looking to get decent hits out to 500 yards for regular target shooting. Can I expect to get about 2MOA consistently?

Also how are the XM80C as far as consistency from lot to lot? I am planning to use the brass for a bolt gun later.

The round cost is decent for the XM80C and since it is supposed to be milspec, I was hoping to be able to standardize on that for M1A fodder. Am I expecting too much?

Thank you all for your advice!

If it is sealed with the tar like seal it won't shoot well. Run it through a seater die and bump it just enough to break the seal and it will shoot better. You'd probably get 2moa if you're shooting it out of a regular NM rifle. Loaded M1A is just service with a SS barrel, correct? If so you're talking 2-4moa I'm guessing but who knows. I have some M80 that shoots really nice.

Hi,

Correct, it just has a NM SS barrel and NM trigger. Not bedded.

I was going to get a few hundred rounds to keep on hand specifically for the M1A. Am I better off with Aguila or Fiocci 150gr FMJBT, instead of the Lake City M80?

The boat tail will help beyond 300yd but is Aguila or Fiocci more consistent than the M80?

Looking to keep it at about 75 cents a round, delivered. These three fit that bill.

Thank you!

There is really no way to know how any of the ammo will shoot in YOUR rifle until you shoot some. It may shoot bug holes in MY rifle and you may not be able to hit the side of a barn with it in YOUR rifle.

Stick with the M80, it is mil spec and compatible with the gas system on the M1A. The 150 gr Aguila or Fiocci may be loaded with a powder that is not suited to the M1A.

Op-rods are not an inexpensive thing to have to replace

Very good point! :)
I think I will stick to the M80. Makes sense.

Thank you!

I would highly doubt a factory loading with 147-150gr bullet is going to use anything that is to slow for a M14/1A gas system. You would probably be fine if you wanted to go that rout. Only time that was an issue was for the 30-06 hunting loads in M1s as the -06 case has more room for slower burning powder.
