Laid up from neck fusion surgery

Dave M.

F-Open Class shooter (284 win, 6dasher, 6.5-7PRCW)
I had unexpected C7-T1 anterior cervical discectomy fusion surgery last Tuesday and just got home on Thursday night. Having done the neck fusion about 10 years ago (C5-C6) I know I will be off work for 8-12 weeks. Last time I taught myself the rather useful skill of lock picking. This time I’m looking to read some of the best rifle shooting and accuracy books available.
Can you guys please suggest some good accuracy of reloading books that you consider a must read?
For reference, I’ve read and have copies of all of Litz’ books, as well as the Tony Boyer Bible on accuracy.

Thanks guys and I look forward to your suggestions.
God bless you and stay healthy.

Best regards,
Dave

Dave, I know you’re F-Class but is prone shooting, where your head is in the equivalent relative position of looking “skyward” for extended periods going to be too stressful for your neck? Just assuming for a moment that you choose to ease your way in, if you were to drop in to some .22 Benchrest matches, first, the whoop-ass in the air really is just as thick. I’ve been enjoying stirring this roil. That’s a very serious operation you underwent.

Dave, I have arthritis in my neck and can’t shoot prone. NRA has a variance that will let you shoot Fclass off a portable bench. It takes a lot of documentation by you. Also takes a lot of time. The approval committee only meets so often. It was worth it for me. Hope this helps.

I hope you heal quickly and completely.

After C-5 / C-6 surgery I needed a follow-up, and that included C7. I am not much of a reader, and it took me two years to lean my head enough for a clear sight picture. I needed to shoot something and that started me onto rimfire benchrest with offset mounts. I now shoot nothing bigger than a 30 BRA and 6.5x 47 ...with brakes.

I’ve read many of the books on rifle accuracy and reloading, Tony Boyer’s book being the best.

The book by Landis I found to be an excellent history on the development of accurate centerfire cartridges.

We have the woodchuck to thank for the accurate cartridges we shoot now.

I’m hoping you recover quickly.

Hope all goes well, I can relate C5-7 fused in 2018. That time off costed me a lot as bought everything for a build with Alex W.
Last time off I learned to pick locks and I wouldn’t mind learning some fun random skill this time around.

My neck has always hurt when I fire more than 1-2 matches in a day.

I may try this at a match this upcoming season. I’m not sure if it would help my scores because I don’t have any experience shooting benchrest style.

Having traveled down the same road. I recommend shooting from a bench. Your neck will thank you.
Smaller caliber is up to you.
