Ladder Tests

Which of the following do you like the best and why? I am not going to give load data. Distance was at 300 yards and the caliber is 224.

I am having a hard tome following your # system. Two 6s, no three??
Take a look at the pix posted as someone seeing it for the first time.

Mike, the load was set at 10 in..

On another note, on #3, the top left 6 is the correct one. the one that is next to the 5 is actually number seven.. numbers 4 & 5 are the same hole. Those loads were. 25.0 & 25.1 grs of RL15 respectively.. I am also liking numbers 5 & 6 on #1. Which is 27.0 & 27.1 grs 2KMR..

On number #1 target I would say 5. Because if you're charge was a little to high or low it should land in the same general spot. I am guessing you were just shooting a ladder and not worried about the wind.

When I run a Audette Ladder test, I do 2 or 3 of the same on different targets so I can correlate them. This way I can be 100% sure of the charge weights that are stable from shot to shot.

Example of a ladder test I did at 328 yards (300meters)....

By correlating both results, I know for a fact that 7-8-9 land in the same spot every shot. So I settled on # 8 (43gr) and when I went to verify the 43gr load with a 5 shot groups at the same distance of 328 yards, here is a pic of the results....

This is a 243w shooting 107smk, H-4831, Win. Brass, 210m.

It doesn't look like he used them but it definitely works. That's what I did when ladder testing. Just keep track of what load used what color, use white paper with small aiming dots and you're good. Color the whole ogive down to the case mouth.

yes, you can use multiple colors. Blue, red, purple, and green sharpies work best for me. Here is a pic that shows 41.7 and 42 have two colors on them. 42.3 has no color and 41.1 and 41.4 landed in the same hole, but were solid green and solid purple.

Correct.. plus.. the 300 yard line is in a hole that does not get any sun..

I like that, thanks for that tip!

How do you know which hole is which shot when you're done?
i am writing it down as i go.. so i had a pc of paper with the image of the target and i would dot it and draw a line to it with a number.. were i screwed up on that one target was transferring the info to the target.. so spank me..

That load would be 27.0 grs of 2KMR.

4,5,6 are good vertical, windage isn't super important when working up powder charges.. If they correlate to what you worked up then go to seating depth testing..

I thought a ladder test was using different loads like 23.1, 23.3, 23.5 etc. Then find the flat spot where they landed on the target at the same level to find the middle of a node. Maybe I am reading this wrong. Matt
