I would suggest 300yards unless you’re proficient at longer ranges. Then test at the distance you intend to shoot at.

I like to use 500 yards. At that distance you will start to see the nodes easier than 300. Then shoot at your intended range.

Rough ladder at 100, then tight powder increments at your max distance works ok

I think 300 yds. past that there are too many other factors starting to play. Also I have found that the bullets have settled down and you can see velocity raise in height.

If your plan is to shoot comps, then run the ladder test at the distance you expect to compete. If it will be at multiple distances, I try and run the test at the longest distance I have available. That is where the velocity variations will show up the most and give the best results.
