Ladder front sight barrel question

I am working on a project gun for shooting high power match rifle. I have a heavy barreled Savage 308. The barrel is about .817 at the muzzle and taper slightly, about .005 to .006 in the first inch. I was wanting to install a ladder front sight or similar on the barrel. Most of the sights are for a .750 dia. barrel. I have a couple ideas to run by you guys. I can have the barrel turned down on the front to .750 and buy a standard ladder sight. The are custom sights that can be made to match my barrel diameter but the taper may have me messed up there.,do you think it would hold on the slight taper?) Just trying to work on a budget and have a gun that will work. If I have the barrel turned down, can I just remove the barreled action from the stock or does the barrel have to be removed from the action.

Thanks

Jim

I would go with the standard size .750 and get the front of your barrel turned down. By the time you get someone to make a custom base its probably dearer that turning the barrel down. Also if you re-barrel or change rifles its will be easier to interchange your front sight.

Most of the sight makers also carry them with a diameter of .812. If you have not got the sight yet, this is worth looking into

The reduced portion of a barrel that a front sight clamps to is called a tenon.

Have a machinist/gunsmith cut the tenon .750x1.500 and you will be good to go. It should only cost approx. $25. If the lathe has a large enough bore in the headstock the barrel won't have to be removed from the action.

Front sight bases are available in .812' ID.

No need to cut the end of your bbl. In fact I would highly recommend against it especially if your bbl is button rifled.

Front sight bases are available from several excellent makers,RightSite, Scott Riles) that are adjustable from 100 yds to 1000 yds.

You won't be disappointed by either of the above.

99.9% of all Palma rifles have a tenon cut at the muzzle. .750x1.500 is the standard. It does not effect accuracy. I have several Pac-nor barrels and one Savage barrel, button rifled) that have this tenon and they all shoot well. My Krieger, cut rifling) also shoots well. Ask any Palma shooter.

My point exactly.

I Just returned form the Range no longer than Three hours ago and shot a 200-17X at 600 yards with a Palma rifle,Broughton 12 twist barrel with the front turned down to .750

Intresting that I know guy who set 11 national records in one weekend @ 300,500 and 600 yards with a Cut rifle barrel,Bartlein), 6BR) with the tennon cut at .750

Everyone has there beleifs, I guess. Mine are on the target.

On a Smallbore Rifle 22Rimfire this may be diffrent subject.
