Krieger barrel twist suggestions...

Hey Guys,

I’m inquiring about building a 6mm br that will be used for varmint shooting, from about 200 to 500 yards under normal field conditions, typical / non optimum conditions, with slight wind/breeze).

I’m looking to purchase:
Krieger No.17 heavy varmint barrel
Stolle Panda Bolt

I want to know the following for the above mentioned conditions:
What barrel twist and length
What type of Ammo,Heavy or lighter bullet and what grain – it sounds like a Heaver bullet would be recommended?)

Any advise on this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Pat

BTW, any input on a Shepherd 6x18 varmint scope?

well bud, i'm kinda in the same boat you are. I'm rather new to this site, been hanging around few a few months reading and researching. The guys <and gals> have been very informative, this is an excellent website to get the information you're looking for. anyways, i'm looking to build the same thing you are, even using kreiger barrel. this <so far> is what i have come up with. but by no means am i an expert, so if someone disagrees, speak up!!

twist rate. i am going to go with 12 twist. That twist is optimized for 80gr bullets,,fowler from what I read are excellent btw). which should be very accurate out to 600yrds. The lighter bullets,60gr and below) don't fair so well at the longer ranges. For barrel length, i'm probably gonna go with 25 or 26". if you don't want to turn necks, go with .271 or 272 neck. I just spoke with Dave Kiff a few days ago from PT&G, and he advised going with .272 as some of the newer lots of lapua brass is a tad thicker than before. for a stock, i like ricahards #005, but thats just me...

Anyways, hope this helps. there's a lot of good articles on this site, take your time and read them.

you would be hard pressed to do much better if you went with a 12 twist and got either some fowler or BIB 80 grn FB bullets. This combo would show great results out to 600 yds.

I think the Shepherd Scope is only a 1" diameter body tube... You may need a 20MOA base to ensure that you retain all of your windage at 600 yards on windy days.

It sounds to me like your about to build my dream rifle, if you can afford it do yourself a favor don't skimp on the optics. I'm a prairie dog shooter and if there's one thing that will absolutely whip you it's eye strain. There's four of us who make at least a couple of 4 or 5 day trips from Texas to shoot dogs in Kansas we've been going for the last five years. We all started out with at least one or two 1" medium price range scopes, not one of us have one left. You could most definitely tell by the end of the first day who wasn't using 30mm high end optics, he'd be the one with a splitting headache and the bloodshot eyes. Remember good clear resoluton rules and there's no place that will prove that to you quicker then spend 8 to 10 hours behind a scope and burning 200 plus rounds a day at multiple moving targets.

I'll throw in a second for a 10-twist. It'll let you shoot a much wider range of bullets than a slower twist barrel.

Hi! If you are going to shoot in windy conditions, the heavier bullet the better,a 1 in 10 twist should work fine.To save time on the build, either buy an action from a vendor on this site, you can try the action manufactures,if none are available that you want, try Bruno's or Hayden's,or Sinclars, they usually have them in stock.Actions, barrels and gunsmiths will be your biggest wait.

I wouldn't suggest the Shepards scope. Guy shoots it in F-class .308 and had trouble. He says it mentions in the manaul deer size targets.

I would say a mill dot reticle and if possible a 1/8 click scope would work nice.

If you plan on shooting 1k...a 1-8 twist at least.

I like the Pac-nor 3 grooves!

RHINOUT!

A 1 in 12 should give you better accuracy with the medium weight bullets but the tighter the twist, the better the splat factor! Velocity heilps with the splat factor also. So part of your dilema is going with a slower twist for more velocity or a faster twist for more explosive fragmentation of the bullet. I tend to lean towards the faster twist in my varmint rigs.
