Krieger barrel fouling

I have a krieger barrel in 6.5 creedmoor AI. I am having the worst trouble with fouling that I have ever seen in any barrel of any caliber. This is my fourth krieger barrel in 6.5 bore, and it must just be a bad one. Using Lapua 108's @ 2850 I get about 20-25 shots with 1/2-1 moa accuracy, and then things go south. At 30-35 shots it turns into 3-5 moa. These are not fired consecutively. I shoot 5 and wait. A good scrubbing with no.9 about 30-40 patches, and the patches quit coming out black and gold. Then it will shoot under a minute again for about 20-25 shots. Icwas just wondering if anyone else has seen this and if so, what will fix it. My arm is getting tired from all the bore scrubbing. I might also add that this is not a brand new barrel. It has about 600 rounds thru it and has been this way from the start.

How many rounds down the tube? With that cleaning method I can imagine some unresolved carbon fowling might be at play.

stick a q-tip down the muzzle and see if you can see any copper deposits. after each shooting session with my 6BR, i soak my barrel in hoppe's #9 for 8-12 hours. i first run a brush through, then soak a patch and push it through. then get my chamber plug and pour the hoppe's down and let it sit. since my krieger barrel on my 6BR does not show any signs of copper fouling, this is enough cleaning for that rifle. but, i do have other rifles in different chamberings that i have to take a heavy copper remover with ammonia and let set in the bore for about 30 seconds then i take a soaked patch of hydrogen peroxide and REALLY SLOWLY push through the bore. out the end of the barrel will come the fiz and little strips of copper fouling. i would try giving either of these a try. then you might want to try some final finish if this does not work.

Treat your barrel in Ultra Bore Coat. I have used it in fouling barrels with great success. Here is a link to the website.

I found R17 to be very fouling in my 6.5 Creedmoor. After 15 or so shots things would start getting screwy, JB paste finally fixed it and it's back to where it should be shooting.

I'm going with what other have said, you've got a dirty barrel. Copper, carbon or both. Time to get some JB paste in there and get it out. Use something like Sweets that has ammonia to give a 'tell' as to whether copper is truly cleaned out. The Q-tip down the barrel or a white patch put down the muzzle end about 3/4" really helps you see what's going on inside, you'll probably see a lot of carbon and copper.

Whats the barrel length?Had a 31" in 6.5x47 which copper fouled at the end. phone call to Mr.North answered my question. Too cold at end of bbl at that length. Cut to 30 and immediately solved my fouling out at the end.

I don't believe Hoppe's #9 will remove copper and especially carbon fouling. I'm using Butch's for all normal cleaning, and use JB bore paste with a bronze brush to keep the copper buildup and carbon fouling under control. Cleaning is monitored with my Hawkeye borescope so I have a real good idea of what works, and more importantly, what does not. All my Krieger barrels ( about 9 now) are my easiest barrels to clean. ;)

I agree with Frank. Hoppes # 9 in not a very effective copper remover. There have been tests conducted ( do a search) where a bullet was immersed in various bore cleaners for 24 hrs. and then weighed afterwards to determine the loss of copper. KG 12 was the winner hands down, it removed 3x more copper than any other, Butches was 4th,followed by Montana X-treme, Sweets, Shooters Choice MC #7........Hoppes showed no loss of copper.

i have had good results using hoppes on copper. after leaving it set in the bore for 8-12 hours, patches will come out blue/green if there is copper fouling. my only barrel that currently shows any copper fouling is my 30" hart barrel chambered in .300 win mag.

One of my silhouette rifles is a Marlin 1894 chambered in 357 magnum for the pistol cartridge matches. Have always used nothing but Hoppe's #9 to clean, even though the only bullets ever used are the very accurate Hornady 158 gr. XTP, a copper jacketed hollow point. Over several years and 3,250 rds. fired never saw a trace of copper on any of the patches, even with soakings of 6 to 8 hours. With the last match, last month gave it the usual cleaning and in a short ime the patches were coming out clean. Powder fouling is so easy to remove I think spit on the patch would work. Then went into the bore with my Hawkeye and saw a bore that looked like it was painted with a brush using copper colored paint. Then spent many hours of cleaning and long term soaking with Butch's to get the accumulated copper out, some still remaining, so will use JB bore paste with a bronze brush to get it down to bare metal. From this time on, any of my rifles that fire jacketed bullets will be cleaned with Butch's only, and the Hoppe's will be used for lead bullets only.

One thing to consider is that a .357 isn't in the same league as a 6.5 Creedmoor in terms of fouling potential. The velocities/pressures are very different.

Of course I understand that, but copper is copper, no matter how it was layed down. Hoppe's #9 (basically kerosene), did nothing to remove it, but Butch's took the majority of it out. Hoppe's proved to be excellent in 45 years of competition shooting with my 1911 45 autos, when using my cast lead bullets only, but a waste of time with zero results after using jacketed bullets. I know what I see with my Hawkeye: it doesn't lie.

Whenever my .22-250s groups start to open up, I go after the bore with JB paste. Otherwise I just patch with Butch's and brush with a bronze bore brush. After that I patch the barrel clean, get all the Butch's out, and go after the remaining copper with Patch Out copper remover. Works like a dream!
