King Richard Schatz goes 2,000 yd at the DOME

The Prince of Dasher is not seen on the Big Stuff--6.5mm, 7mm, 30 Cal thread very often but today he made an appearance at the Dasher Dome up on Top of Rocky Top. He started off with a couple of sighters at 1,000 to check the zero on the Viper SS, Robertson Stocked 284 Win shooting 180gr hybrids, then proceeded on to the 1428 yard berm. We picked out a small rock and after a couple of shots the rock disappeared. Then he shot a Bat SB dual port 6 XC smithed by Tim Claunch of the Memphis Mafia. The 6 XC landed a few 115's very close to the targeted rock.

Then we took a break and Shayne and Richard took a truck tour of the 800 yard range and I took an 18 inch plate to a spot that lazered 1440 yards. Painted white, she was a very visible target. I took the first 3 shots at the plate and when I hit it at 12 noon I handed the 284 off to Richard. He landed a couple of shots just off at 12 and then one just under at 6. Then he hit. I think he missed the next shot and then made 3 consecutive hits.

Not bad for a guy who had never shot past 1,000 yards. Now Richard said he was ready to go the 2,000 yard line at the other location a mile down the road at Rocky Top II. We were running out of daylight, but the wind had went to zero. When we got to the top of the hill the view of the target area two valleys over was perfect. The setting sun highlighted the landscape with a brilliant glow. Perfect visibility. The King took his first few shots at 2 K and got her dialed in and hit a couple of rocks, one making white dust from either bullet disintegration or from rock vaporization. The Ole 284 Black Bird was amazingly close on most every shot.

Richard's smile at the end of the video after seeing the impact splash

Next day I got over to the 1440 yard plate to take pics and repaint. Richard had a streak of three consecutive hits on the 18 inch plate setting at 1440 yards with the 284 win.

Second day Richard was shooting short range up to 800 yards with his 6mm Dasher Neiska J down at the DOME. It was getting late and the conditions were favorable so Richard said are we going up on Rocky Top today. "You want to try the Baby Tracker Stocked Dasher at 1400 yards"? Richard said he would love to so we packed up and moved up the hill.
He started on a white rock at 1428 yards then moved to the 18 inch plate at 1440.
Long video but the clarity gets better near the end.

Yuppers, shooting features is awesome,,, I wish I could find more of those dust white rocks to shoot on my clay River bank outting...

Talcum powder borders are the go to dusters that deffinatly give off a cloud,,, Quarts rock is another fine bolder to chip away at...

Thanks for the idea...

Cheers from the North

Don, what calibers are you shooting in Canada ?

I doubt I'll ever shoot well enough to be called "king" but I'm building up a 284 and I'm curious, how much MV and barrel length you were using to get to 2,000?

I'm hoping to get hits at a mile.

Do you think it's possible off of bags? I don't have a fancy rest.

Thanks for reinforcing my ELR aspirations.

I wanted 32 inches, but she wound up 30 in because something was wrong with the reamer and had to rechamber it. You need at least 30 with the slow burning powder.
I use RL-17 to get a extra 75 fps or so. 2925 fps is what I shoot.
And yes, bags are fine as long as you can hold the crosshair steady.

Awesome, I ordered a 31" barrel because it's the longest X-Caliber offered.

I'm probably going to start with H4831sc and if that doesn't make it, I'll try RL17.

burdog, I'm up here in Wisconsin. My friend Terry (Wisconsin) has shot with you guys. Thank you for the invitation but I ain't much of a traveler. Just enjoy your reports.

Yes sir. Terry has been a fine mentor to me, with regard to long range benchrest shooting. Have a 6BRA built by Alex Wheeler. Have not competed with my rifle yet, due to family commitments. Currently difficult to get enough trigger time. Just love to good to the range and see what I am capable of on a given day. Again, really enjoy your reports. Love like to meet you guys. You could come up to cooler Wisconsin and shoot the monthly IBS matches at Columbus.

Thanks. Terry has invited me up that way. Had lunch at Terry’s on this way back from Montana. Night before we had supper with Schatz in Bismark

I live in Sheboygan. You need to try a traditional Sheboygan bratwurst (my choice of a last meal). Maybe after salmon fishing on Lake Michigan? If the waves ain't to big.
