There is a small paper book on the early Kimber’s that goes over the serial numbers and production numbers early the Oregon built rifles. I used to know a guy that had a copy but it’s been years since I’ve seen him. I don’t know if there’s a site for Kimber owners but someone must have a copy somewhere. They were pretty limited production in the early day. Many were custom orders from dealers. And custom serial numbers were and option. So depending on how popular your model was a 3 digit number is no guarantee of first year production.

You might try the Kimber forum at rimfirecentral.com. I think that you might have a good chance of getting some info there.

I did have the Kimber book with serial number information but it went to a collector who bought some of my KOO 82's.
I seem to recall a copy of it floating around on an internet forum a few years ago, you may be able to come up with a link by googling.

I think you are going to need some production information to determine when an 84 was made. By the time they got that rifle in production, the serial number game had started. You could get any number you wanted on them.

The new owners may have obtained record with the ownership, when they bought. Would not hurt to check with them.

PS: I have a Kimber collectors manual and will check if any info on serial numbers.

jambrdly, Your rifle appears to be a Custom Classic as evidenced by the ebony forend tip. That model was introduced on 3/6/85. Manual provides no info on serial numbers or number made. Just shows production as "ongoing". The manual was printed in September 1985. Nice rifle. Good luck with the sale.

Talking about Kimber 84 rifles, I've seen a couple of 223 Varmint rifles for sale which have a laminate stock a fluted barrel and are singleshot, how common are these rifles?
I have also seen one with a Walnut stock are these less common than the laminate stock?

Kiwi, those lam stocks were a standard model offering for a few years. If you saw a Kimber in 223, it was likely a Model 84M Varmint. I have one in 204 Ruger, walnut, SS fluted bbl. Some of the walnut stocked rifles had some nice wood, some looked like boat paddles. Mine was hand picked from a lot of 20, not 'wow' quality, but decent for a production rifle.
