Kelbly KLP plastic surgery

This is a Kelbly KLP inletted for a short 700 that I'm fitting a BAT SV into. I've got most of the whittlin' done on the tang, established the new action screw holes and the pillars are made and in. These are some random pics of the process....you'll have to excuse my hieroglyphics. Next step will be to fill all the 700 cuts and then cut in the new bolt notch, loading port, bolt release notch, notch for the gas escape port and the recoil lug mortise for the front recoil lug.

Nice work! I have a kekbly 1m inletted for a grizzly that I'm thinking about adjusting to suit a Barnard S. Everything your doing would be relevant to that job so I'll be watching with keen interest!

Got the loading port, bolt release and bolt notch roughed in today.

The action has some......quirks. The cocking piece is excessively tight in the shroud and the firing pin assy is tight where it passes through the forward part of the shroud. But those are straight forward fixes and part of what needs to be looked at even with a new action. A real puzzler is the screw threads in the action for the action screws. Sparing all the gorey details, the threads in the action have a taper to them. Even the mfgs supplied action screws won't go in more than a turn and a half before becoming too tight. Nor will any of the literally hundreds I have on hand of all the thread classes.

A few minor bumps in the Benchrest road, is all.

Oopsies! A thread milling program goof? I've had that on some early blind scope base holes. Ran them through and then ran a tap in.

Action screw holes fixed....center one won't be used on this one. -Al

After having the barrel shank cut and a pinned recoil lug fitted, it's in the bedding now. Dave Tooley's suggestion of a rubber 'o' ring to support and center the barrel works great. On this one, I placed it at the balance point of the barreled action so the action floats on the bedding with not much stress on it other than a light wrap of tape.

Ended up pretty well with right at .001 movement when either action screw was cracked loose. I'm pretty happy with that because when you use these large head 82 degree action screws in a matching countersunk area in the pillar, you can sometimes see a bit more movement than a flat-to-flat action screw and pillar connection. The movement on the dial indicator can be a fake out as the tapered surfaces don't 'fall away' as cleanly....hope I 'splained that ok.

It's now off to a talented local that's going to finish the body work and then it goes to hydro dip. It's owner should be pretty happy with the end product.

Will be switching gears next to a 788 Remington that needs pillars and a few tweaks.

Thanks, Paul. I really like doing bedding work. On the other hand, I hate inletting with a passion. I'd rather stick my finger in a vise and start tightening it than inlet a stock. There's a flat top McMillan here that keeps taunting me...when I'm in mood for a good beat down, I'll start whittlin'.
