Kelbly Custom Rifle ?

I was thinking about ordering a Custom rifle from Kelbly but I've never seen one they built and don't know how good they are compared to rifles built by other gunsmiths.

I emailed Jim to ask about price and delivery witch both sounded fair.

this is what I am thinking about getting

Stolle Panda action, left bolt, right port, PPC boltface, polished action
Jewel 2oz trigger
Kelbly klub stock with weight system and buttplate
polished kelbly 30mm scope rings
scope base, polished
action wrench
barrel vise
Bullet Seating Gauge w/ chamber
Hart Match barrel chambered in 6ppc

will this build be top of the line competition quality or should I get my local gunsmith to do the build and just get the parts from Kelbly ?

have to act fast to be able to get the gun before next season starts.

I've got two 6PPC rifles built by Kelblys. If you are going to compete, you might want to consider a LB/RP/LE with a TG ejector. They do great work and are great guys too. You won't be sorry if you get them to build it.

The TG ejector is pretty nice, I have one in my recent build. Though more to do with the extractor than the ejector, mine handles PPC and BR cases equally fine.

Dansig,

You wouldn't be sorry to ask Kelblys to do the whole work. They are top notch!
Also ask Jim to make the dies. Mine is a full length die, made from Newlon blank. Work great.

Btw, you mention "scope base, polished" --- Stolle Panda has an integral scope base Davidson style. You mean action polished?
LE / RE, micro port? Neck & freebore?

I was thinking Left bolt, right port, no eject only extractor.
neck.. probably .262 but I'm not sure about freebore, I will be using Berger 68gn FB target bullets so I need to know the right freebore for those bullets.

are those dies as good as Wilsons dies ? are they for arbor press or like the Redding dies ?

still trying to decide and get my order together, will try to send it in tomorow.

those more experienced please put together a complete list for me with all the details based on my first post.. I have never ordered a custom rifle before so I don't know all the details needed for the order.

The only thing I'd add is that "new" is another word for unproven. A good used, but proven winning rifle is worth MORE, than new, imo, but can usually be bought for less. Ps....I just realized you're left handed. That does of course make finding that winning used rifle considerably harder in LB configuration. Kelblys does good work.

I´ve been offered one used rifle, built by Kelbly 20 years old and it was the same price as new and it was without a barrel and all the extras I have in my list...

the sellert didn't mention if it ever won any titles....

Dansig,
Action configuration is definitely of your choice/preference including the ejection.
The FL die Newlon is used with regular press, not arbor type. I made the press myself resembling the Harrel's compact and use a Wilson seater die.
My ppc has .270 neck with 0.040 freebore. Ask Jim about the neck & freebore if you have no idea which one. Jim has a lot of ppc reamers, he can give you the right direction. Just tell him the bullet(s) you want to use.
Btw, Jim can also provide you with a drop port version.

Some weights info:
Stolle Panda + Jewell trigger + trigger guard + 2 screws = 34.05 oz
LV Barrel @ 21.5" is approx. 79.20 oz (would be about 81 oz @ 22")
LV gun is 168 oz max. You have 54 oz max for the scope & rings & stock & the buttplate. (Don't worry it's still quite easy to make LV weight with a Kelbly Klub, a March scope & double screw rings).

Hope this help,
seb.

Dansig,
In my opinion, 'winning rifle' is more depend on the barrel (i.e. hummer), the load combinations, and the driver. Most LV guns are built in the same/similar approach, you have same/typical action, barrel in given length & contour, given stock configuration, etc. (Given that all parts & workmanship are in Benchrest standard). They would also balance & track very closely, unless you have a really different one.
A winning rifle for shooter 'A' could be not a winning rifle for shooter 'B', vice versa a 'so-so' rifle in the hand of shooter B could be a winner for shooter A. Just for instance.
To me, it's more about the barrel & load combinations & the driver.

Seems meet to your specs & sounds interesting.
