Kelbley's Barrels

Last week, I decided to purchase a new barrel for my 6mm PPC. I called Kelbly's and ordered a barrel and chambering to fit my Stolle Panda action. I was informed that there would be a 3 to 4 month delivery time, to which I agreed.

Someone suggested that I look in to having a barrel chambered by a Gunsmith. I called Bob Green in Pa to have the work done locally. That would give me the chance to meet and greet him, while establishing a personal relationship with a good and competent gunsmith in the bench rest circle.

Feeling there was no rush, I procrastinated in cancelling the chambering by Kelbly's. On Monday, I received a call from Kelbly's telling me that my barrel was chambered and ready for delivery. As I have placed the order, I felt obligated to accept and pay for the finished barrel. I feel bad that I had told Bob Green I would give the job to him, but I also feel that fulfilling my order at Kelbly's is the right thing to do.

I have confidence that either way I had gone, I would receive the best workmanship possible, so I will get a top notch barrel either way. I will be building another rifle in a month or so and will try to make it up to Bob by having him do the work.

Kelbly's told me that the reason for the unusual fast service was that they had the barrel in stock and had a previous order to fulfill exactly like mine and decided to do both at the same time.

Hey Nick: I think I might have pointed you towards Bob. If Bob already started, I have a Panda that needs a new Bob Green barrel!:)

Your a smart man dealing with 2 of the best.Bob has built 2 of my bench rifles and the third is a used Kelbly . Both guns Bob built are on Pandas. Top flight folks, all you have mentioned. Bob is a wealth of knowledge. Now ship it to Bob and have him install one of his tuners, a great addition you will learn to appreciate.

No, he did not start it. I only ordered the barrel from Kelbly last week. They were going to chamber it for me also, Told me it would take at least 3 months to get it. I assumed I had plenty to cancel the order and called Bob Green, who agreed to do the job if I got the barrel. Kelbly surprised me and called a week later with the job completed. from what I have read and from the experiences of my friends, this is an unheard of experience. Many have told me they have waited sometimes for more than 6 months for a barrel.

I hadn't considered a tuner, but that sounds like a plan. That will get me back in Bob's good graces hopefully. I don't like being between a rock and a hard place. It's embarrassing. I just hope Bob understands.

I can guarantee you one thing Nick, you are an honorable man and nobody can think otherwise after you honored your agreement with Kelbly. If I were Bob Green, I would consider you to be a valued customer for any future work! And as far as Kelbly's is concerned, they always do everything in their power to meet or exceed their own expectations! I have found in most cases they exceed them!

Might as well just get them both. With the barrel life a 6PPC has you're going to need another one eventually anyway. They aren't going to get any cheaper in the future.

Nice to know there are still some "stand-up" guys around . Good on ya , Nick . I have a Kelby F-TR .308 that Ian did , and it is a quality piece . Someday , I hope to operate it as well as it works . Kind of ; more gun , than operator ...
