Kahles 3-12x50 target/tactical -enough magnification?

Newbie here, have been reading some forums and wanted some expert advice. Looking into a good quality scope with some tactical/adjustable turret options. Anyone have thoughts or experience with this scope and is 12x too little magnification?

Hi FK
Well,to say the truth I have no experience with this particular scope but what I know about Kahles is that they're most probably Swarowski mother company;they're one of the oldest riflescope makers in Europe,if not the very oldest;they were the Austrian court's purveyers, and the Whermacht during both WW I & ww II;so my opinion is that you can't go wrong chosing a Kahles,as to the magnification it depends what you want to shoot at.

Quality wise, they're good scopes although I don't see as many as I use too. Second hand info, I heard something along the lines that there was "distributor" issues/conflicts.

Whether or not 12x is enough depends on you. For me, I like magnification with the option to crank down the power when needed. Things to consider is its intended use and the distance you're shooting.

One thing to remember, if you're shooting long distances is to make sure the scope has enough internal elevation adjustments for your loads. For example, a 308 may need 42-45 MOA for 1000 yds from the 100 yd zero. That is a tall order with a 50 MOA scope internal adjustment. There are 20-30 MOA bases and scope rings with off-sets to help but depending on the load, you may not be able to shoot up close (100-200 yds). Also, parallax adjustments are a good option to have as the distance gets longer too. A/O or S/F is a personal preference.

A 30mm scope more often than not provides greater internal adjustment than 1" scopes.

If you're shooting human size targets you're spot on for most tactical positions but target shooting is another ball game and the more magnification you have the better as long as you can see the target clearly.

fkroosher,

If the scope you are considering is comparable to the Nightforce glass then you are in luck. In side by side comparison at 521 yards the Nightforce on 12X matched the Swarovski z5 set on 16 1/2X to resolve the same detail . When I moved out to 725 yards the Nightforce was on 20X and the Swarovski needed on 25X.

Thanks for the info everybody. Ended up getting a Kahles K418. Looking at a custom Mauser 98 7x57AI to put it on. Anybody have experience with that caliber?
