Just picked up a 300 WSM and 2 powders

Today I got a Savage in 300 WSM choate stock, 1-10 twist 24". I grabbed a bag of Winchester brass and some
Hybrid 100V and some 8208XBR to try with some 168 amax's. Anyone have experience with either of these 2?

i'd be careful of those two powders, i think they were intended for smaller case's. the go to powder is H-4350 start out around 58grns and work up SLOW!!. good luck to ya!

RL-17 is worth a look as well. All of the powders in the 4350-4831 speed will probably be a better fit.

Hey VMAX,

I've been working with the 300 WSM for a few years now, but I haven't used either of those powders. I don't typically use bullets that light either. The real advantage to the short magnum is being able to drive the heavier bullets (200gr+), with their higher BCs at the same velocity that a 308 win would shoot a 155 gr bullet.

If you are target shooting, the high BCs really buck the wind better and you'll see it even more so at the longer ranges. If you hunt, then the added bullet weight dramatically increases knock down power.

From my experience, the 8208XBR will be a bit too fast burning to produce good results in the short mag, even with the lighter 168s. The H100V on the other hand, should produce some real good results. According to the HODGDON site, it produced the fastest speeds of the powders they have.

I have had some of my best results with R22 and H4831, both of which were fairly temperature stable, but again, I typically shoot 210 gr SMKs.

Update! Thanks for the help! Hybrid sucked, 8208 was deadly with the 110's. I ended up going with RL17 with 200gr accubonds. Fantasic combo in this savage! 5 shots touching a 100, under .8" at 300. This was in 95 degree temps here in Pa. The hybrid 100v started to show promise once I switched from the mag primers. It was absolutely horrible with mag primers. This is my first shortmag for me.
