Just ordered 6mm BR Custom

I'm slowly building up my varmint arsenal and have placed my first order for a 6mm BR custom rifle. I was given the name of a local smith in Northern VA and called to talk with him yesterday. I know I need to go in and meet him to go over all the particulars. But I am short on time right now due to my work schedule and working offshore on a tug boat, so he has my wish list and will start compiling pricing and ordering stuff on his end. Anyways the following is what I am having put together.

McMillan A-5 Stock with adjustable cheek piece in OD Green,
Surgeon 591 Short action
Shilen Bull barrel 1/8" finished at 28" with threads for break or suppressor TBD later with .272 neck
Jewell Trigger

Only undecided part is the scope and mounts. Thinking of getting a Nightforce or Sightron but unsure of power and reticle.

I haven't got a time line or quote yet but know it will not be cheap and the wait will probably be at least 4 months from what I've gathered just on the lead time for the stock availability. No worries though, I have plenty of other toys in the safe to get dialed in and loads perfected before next spring and my first PD trip. Nothing is set in stone right yet for the build, so if anyone has any words of wisdom they would be appreciated.

Some good equipment choice there for a field rifle. One thing: I don't know what you mean by a "bull" barrel. I would suggest something such as a Heavy Varmint countour with a mild taper, ending up about 0.900" at the muzzle. This will balance better than a full contour, and I bet it will shoot every bit as well as a straight contour 1.25".

You need to think about the bullets you want to shoot. That will dictate the freebore, and to a certain extend the barrel brand and dimensions you want to order.

If you're going to shoot alot from a bench with a front rest and sandbags, I'd skip the A-5.

I had one on a long range prairie dog gun and, due to the flat on the butt, it sucked because you always had to dick with the front rest for elevation changes. I sold it and replaced it with a Marksman stock, which has an identical forend, with a little fuller butt with a normal taper on the bottom side.

An A-5 makes a great prone/all around stock and works exceptionally good on the bags, except when shooting off a bench and having to change continually for yardage differences.

To me, shooting prairie dogs prone is cruel and unusual punishment.....

If you are dead set on an A-5, there's a couple of places that stock them, no point in waiting. Not sure if I'd spring for the adjustable cheekpiece, though.

I'd top it off with a Nightforce 5.5-22x50 wth the NP-R1 reticle in a Seekins medium rings sitting on a Seekings 20 MOA base.

To answer the couple questions/comments, I am looking to use 87 grains on up to the 105-109 range bullets in hornady, sierra or lapua. the gun will not be shot off a bench except for sighting in, pretty much solely for varmints off a bipod. i like the a-4 as well, but it is a bit more blown up on the front end. and yes im leaning more towards the nightforce line of scopes. where can i find the a-5s quick like? ill jump all over it right now. thanks for the help everyone.
