just got some 65grn V-Maxs can't wait to try them out

Just picked up some 65grn V-Max for the .243, can't wait to get a load worked up. Looks like 43.4grns of IMR 4064 is max, guess I'll start there.

I have been shooting the 65gr v-vax in the 6br for around ten years and swear by them.I get around 3,500fps with them in the br. have know idea what you can push them at in the .243. I chose them because i wanted a bullet that would out perform a 22-250 in the field(no small task) It came in that the 65gr v-max gave me the best BC in a bullet that i could push fast enough to get the job done. accuracy at the bench has been consistantly in the mid 2s to mid .4s at worst.(mostly mid .2s) shot two 5 shot groups tonight 1 was .280 the other was .300.performance in the field has been everythink one could hope for.Flat shooten and Hard hitten.you allways get a good wolop report back from a good hit. If they shoot in your gun you should be happy with their field performance.

9.25:1 it shoots the 58grn V-Maxs really well out to about 350. Wanted to try these, see if they will do a little better in the wind.

Went to the range today. Conditions were really bad, wind blowing really hard from 0 to 90 deg, gusting up to about 25-30mph with rain spitting on and off. Prob should have waited but I knew I wouldn't have a chance to go again till next wknd so thought I'd risk it.

Tried three loads, 43, 42 and 41grns of IMR4064. The 43s did the best but the 42s were close, may have to try a 42.5. Here's the best group of the day with 43grns:

When weather clears have to see what it does at longer ranges.

Mattri,
I would at least shoot 43gr again and play with seating depth. your group looks good! It may even get better with tweaking the seating depth, or not. I would try 42.5 45.8 at the same seating depth as 43gr, as well play with the seating depth with 43gr on my next range trip. If one of the other powder charges showed better than 43gr that you shot today. I would start tweaking that load. 43gr does look promising! Good Shooting

Ah that looks like a .450 ish group.respectable! am i right? thats good for the conditioins you say you were shooting in. Do you have access to a chronograph,i would be curious what speed you are getting. like i said i been shooting them at 3,500 fps and have a few kills at the 500yd mark, missed one at 560yds was right there at em.(ground hogs) yardage reading with leica rangemaster1200.They carry realy well in the field and they shoot way flatter than what the books or even what my balistic program says(in my rifle).I have a good friend who shoots the 58gr v-max and he says they shoot way flatter than what they are supposed to.(B.S.er).huh!.You will be very happy with that bullet.

I shoot the 58 V-Max in a 6mm Remington. 48.0 Varget gives about 4030-4055 from a 26" barrel. That is a max load in that rifle and loads should be reduced and reworked in another. Groups are .4-.6 but run a little tighter at 47 grains and 3965.

Years ago the load in my .243 Rem varmint was W760 powder and a Sierra 60HP at 3800. It was very accurate, very effective on pd's. With 760 that 65VMax should do 3650-3700 without any trouble.

pretty hard to evaluate with just one group. Also you need to use some wind flags of some type to get the most out of your time, and rifle. Good luck and happy shooting. Load work is best part!! Oh, and those 65gr v-max play hell on coyotes! I love them!! Lee

Thanks for the replies. Need to load some up and do more extensive testing. Can't wait to see what they do at extended ranges. And as far as wind flags- yeah, really need to pick some up.

Mattri, just a suggestion--after looking at your group pic, I would recommend trying a different primer but use the same load and seating depth as your pic. Sometimes it will close the group into a nice tight little triangular group with each bullet hole cutting each other. I've done it many times. Nice shooting. Ron

Funny you should mention that, just last night I loaded up some rounds using CCI br primers. Conditions should be better this weekend.

Winchester 760 H414 with fed 210,cci200, or 91/2 really shine........

in a 243 with the 65's, velocity will be 3700+ and bug hole accuracy.

760 is a lot easier on the throat vs IMR 4064.

Good luck!

Went out pding with this round this weekend. Out to 300 yards the effects were spectacular. Very accurate and blew the pds apart.
