Just an FYI for easy moly removal on bullets

Recently I bought some moly coated bullets off of the classified section. I looked around searched a few web sites and found no easy way to remove the moly coating. I got to thinking and came up with a method that worked very well, took the coating off quick, and with little effort.

I put the bullets into a jar and filled the with jar Kroil, until the bullets was covered. I took the jar, and taped the lid still and placed it in my tumbler for 30 minutes. I then took the jar poured off the nasty looking Kroil, and then washed the bullets in lacquer thinner, but putting them in another jar, and just covering the bullets. I swished them around by hand, and let them soak for about 10 minutes. I then poured off the lacquer thinner, and dried them on a paper towel.

This is what they looked like after done.

All I had to do was put them in a vibratory case tumbler with walnut media and that worked fine. Couldn't be any easier than that.

Same thing I have done. They aren't shiney and pretty but they shoot the same as my non moly 168SMK's.

I did the same, but left them overnight.

They came out shiny new but I burned up the vibrator in the process! Much less time is all that is needed.

What brand and size of the tumbler and; what caliber and how many did you try at one time? I've let brass tumble overnight many times but bullets are definetly heavier. I'm interested in trying but I don't want to trash a tumbler in the process.

Thanks,

tjtjwdad, I use an old style RCBS vibratory tumbler to Danzac coat my bullets. I've got about a whole package of steel BB's as media that's always in the tumbler and then add the bullets of choice. One night last week I tumbled a batch of 600 Hornady 75gr 22 cal. bullets for about 6 hours. No ill effects to anything. I frequently run my other RCBS vibratory tumbler all night long with 200 plus 223 cases in walnut media; never any problems. John Kruzan

re my burned out vibrator;

I don't remember the brand, but it was a small one and I believe the fan failed and the motor overheated.

I had the bowl pretty full of walnut media and dumped in about 100 105gn 6mm A-MAX's.

The vibrator was probably 4 years old and was regularly used to clean 243 WIN cases for 3 hours each time. It wasn't a new, squeeky clean unit! The thing ran all night and when I went out to un-plug it it smelled a "bit" warm but was still going. Turned it off and later wouldn't come back on. It's possible it had a "hot spot" in the motor windings that were kept safe by the fan, but soon as power was removed and fan stopped. it sat and cooked off some insulation with no cooling air circulating.

I find loading and shooting them the easiest......

Thanks John & Norm. I have some moly coated bullets I would like to get cleaned off. Used Lead-Away works very well but it gets cumbersome on the fingers after a while.

Thanks again,
