Just about ready......

The CZ 457 AT-One build for the grandson is coming along. First range
day was yesterday, and came up with a list of changes to get done and
head back out. First was the Shade Tree I've been changing up with the
machining of a new top plate and longer joystick. The new top can now
be used with up to an 8" bag. I put a 4" bag on it and made a picatinny
mounted plate for the rider. It's taller then I want, but for a rimfire, it's
as stable as you can get. I prefer the Bald Eagle bag tensioners, so I added
those to the new plate. Rear rider I machined works better then expected.
I mounted up one of my Bushnell XRS scopes with Burris low mounts. This way
I can lower the cheek piece a bit, then adjust it to fit the grandson.....I did a 50
yard and 100 yard sight in with an old box of CCI Mini Mags then went to
the Wolf Match Extra ammo to shoot some groups. Not real happy with the
Wolf. The Mini Mags shot way tighter and on par with what I experienced
with some ancient Remington Target ammo......So now, I'll get him on it
and start shooting groups. Four bricks of Mini Mags stored away so that
will let him get some trigger time in.....And one last note.....I installed a
Timney trigger awhile back. It can be set for 10 ounces but left it at one
pound. This thing breaks so clean it feels like it's 6 ounces ??

A lot more joy stick travel once I cleared the trigger guard. With the slight
bend I put in it, It's right in your hand and no long reach.

Too bad you are going to handicap him with shooting CCI Mini Mags from a rifle worthy of seriously good ammo (SK Rifle Match at a minimum, CX would be better - if you can buy any).

One thing at a time. As it is, I'll be testing RWS and Eley. But at
this point. I'll have him shoot up old stocks to build some bench
manners......Pulled off a few one inch groups with the Mini Mags
at 100 !! Sure surprised me !!

It is what it is. Saturday morning's UBR 100 yard match at Anderson
Creek had 12 year old grandson Zach shoot his first ever benchrest
match. Our main range here in Erie was closed for another event so
Zach did not get the chance to shoot groups at 100 yards. I had it
set up with the Wolf ammo because it was what we had the most of.
I left my Main match rifle home and decided to shoot the match
with him and stay at the bench to coach. Winds were not too bad
but still not a rimfires friend. For our top center fire shooters, scores
are in the upper 250's. With the rimfires it was a struggle but I managed
a 166, and Zach managed a 163. One particular target, Zach missed
a scoring ring and had to take a zero for that bull. If he would have
touch a scoring ring, I would have lost.....Either way, I have some more
tweaking with the rifle, and start testing ammo which I will have him do.

One note of interest.....After the first relay and both of us having luck
go the other way, fellow shooter, Mike Hagan gave us 2 boxes of SK-
Red box for the cause. I'm shooting first, so I set to shoot that SK at
my sighters. We had 10 minutes per relay so I had plenty of time to
get adjusted before going to the record target. First shot of the SK
did not print nor did the second. The SK felt wimpy with lower recoil
then the wolf. I held to the very top of the target and let the third one
Fly. It printed, so I raced off 4 more. It shot no better then the Wolf and
a full "8 inches low". I went back to the Wolf to shoot my record. There
was one huge velocity difference shown. I'll need to put them both across
the Lab radar to see what's up, but in the same conditions at match
time, The SK did not impress with that rifle. Honestly. we both would
have been better off shooting the CCI Mini Mags for this event, and
that's no joke !!!

This adventure is just getting started .....Stay tuned !!

And run it dirty for a while and see what it will do also. I've found some likes 40-50 shots before it'll settle in, not necessarily shots of the good stuff, but a thoroughly seasoned barrel.

Yes Sir !! Putting a dent in the wallet the last two days, getting
a mix of the top shelf, mid shelf, and bottom of the barrel. That
SK match rifle that was given to me will need to be checked on
my Lab Radar. It just felt like I was popping off 22 shorts. The
large drop in elevation showed it was slow......Maybe by this
weekend I'll have everything gathered up. and will just need to
watch the weather service for a favorable morning. The Sparta
range about 40 miles south of me lets you shoot as early as 6 am.
I guess it's because the Amish are already up and working and
don't mind the noise......

It usually runs about 1080 fps. All guns are different but you should be within 20fps of that number

SK Match has given the absolute worst accuracy in my two rifles, so bad I gave away the last box. It was a major disappointment given all of the good reviews. Maybe it was just a bad lot.

Last couple of boxes of test ammo came in, and now just going to
wait for several calm mornings. I'll be up front about not including
anything Lapua other then the new x-act, of which only one box and
will be shot last. Ether way, if it shoots the best, I still will not buy more.
Of what is in the pic, other then the x-act, I have three boxes of each.
Technically I already tested the SK against the Wolf Extra in an actual
100 yard UBR match. It did me no favors, and went back to the Wolf.
I will run the numbers though on it with the Lab Radar since I'm curious
about why it shot extremely low compared to the Wolf.....The old lot of
Remington target was an initial surprise, and shot better then the Wolf
when I was just doing initial sighting work.....The old lot CCI standard
will be the anchor lot first test.....Plan is to fire 10 for sighters, then the
remaining 40 for record and across the Lab Radar. None of this ammo
will be sorted, so 40 shots across the Lab will show all the bad breaks.
When I am done, I want the grandson to repeat the test which will be
difficult, considering school will be starting and busy weekends. It is
what it is.

As a side note......I'm personally more interested to see how the Eley
Tenex will stack up with the RWS's R-50 and R-100......Stay tuned !!

I had a relatively calm morning to test the first 3 on my list.
The Remington Target I was given did not do as well as my
original lot.....The Wolf Match extra started out great then
went vertical for 2 bulls, then horizontal for the last 2 bulls
with no wind. I put up flags every 10 yards. They were limp.
The SK was a little bit more open with a crazy flier on the 3rd
bull. It would have been nice and tight. Even still, with not
counting the flier,, group avg would have been in the high
6's with the Wolf besting in my rifle......I left the Lab Radar at
home and did not check the SK's velocity's but, for the first
10 shots of each before going to record, the SK shot better
then an inch lower then the other 2 on the sighter target.

On another note.....I had a Harrels tuner brake lying around
with a 1/2-28 thread and threw it on prior to the main test.
With it off, I shot some mini mags to get a feel. With it on,
it did reduce recoil and noise a bit but not enough for me to
tell you to buy one.....At least, once I find a decent lot, I can tune
it a bit, and even try to bring in a lot that is'nt doing so good.

I'll need to pick another calm day for the next test of the RWS
50 and 100 with the Tenex......
and

Set up as used, and target.

Did you clean the bore between different brands of ammo?

Barrel is cleaned between brands, then 10 rounds of the next batch
is fired on a sighter target before going to record......

I have a small window this morning and should be able to finish the
last several brand tests.

Just goes to show that every rifle is different.
Test
The factory ammo is the weak link in a good 22lr
The $20+ ammo doesn't shoot any better than the 5 or $10
in many rifles.
You might get less fliers, but they are still there.
