2018 will be the 75th Aniv. I am going over to participate in the ceremonies along with many others Rangers from past to pressent. I have an opportunity to participate in the parachute jump as well and plan on doing everything I can to get my body in shape for it.

Three of my Grandmothers brothers landed on Gold beach on D-Day. One was killed within 5 minutes of hitting the beach after storming a building full of German troops. The second was killed on the last day of the war in Germany by splinters from a hand grenade thrown at them during a shoot out with the enemy. The third won the Distinguished Conduct Medal by storming a German machine gun nest on his own, killing 4 of the enemy and taking 10 prisoners. I for one will not forget! What a generation!

My father-in-law was a D-Day army veteran. He joined the Army in 1942 and was in until the end of WWII and served in both France and Germany. He died a few weeks ago at the age of 96.

I forgot to mention about the Outstanding Military Tribute that was given to him at the end of his funeral. The Flag Folding Ceremony, presenting the Flag to our family and especially Taps brought tears to everyone's eyes.

I lost one uncle in North Africa when a bomber hit a mountain. Two other uncles were captured in the Philippines and survived the Bataan to Corregidor death march and almost 4 years as POWs in Japan. My father was in the Navy and stationed at Paris Island, he worked for the medical corps in a dental outfit preparing Marines for duty over seas.

Sounds like your family paid a very heavy price for our freedom. God Bless Them!

In reading these posts I must agree that the WWII VETS were our greatest generation.
We have much to be thankful for. GOD BLESS AMERICA

My grandfather served in WWI, my Dad in WWII. Fortunately I served during peacetime. This monument explains it very well.

During the Memorial Day weekend, I spent a lot of time on the phone with members of my platoon in Vietnam and two of them mentioned Saving Private Ryan. We agreed that we were "Lucky", not to have been in on "that war". My father and 11 uncles served in Europe and the Pacific during WW II. They loved America, all their lives and made sure all their children understood what a privilege it was to live in such a country.

I don't believe they could comprehend some of the things that go on in our schools and universities in this country today, nor the loathing that some have for American ideals. Our country is not perfect, but nobody is fleeing it, so it's got to be as good as there is.

I am so privileged to have lived my life in the America that was forged by the founders and the generations that have fought to preserve our freedoms. God bless those who stormed those beaches.
What we are seeing is an invasion into our country today by civilization's worst enemy, Islam. They don't call it 'Creeping Sharia' for nothing. The media and our politicians are colluding with this invasion, by not properly identifying our enemy, if not naming it at all. (Obama). We must take responsibility for knowledge and knowing. (See Dr. Bill Warner.)
My father fought in Saipan & Iwo Jima. He told a couple of stories of the barbarity.
My brother fought at the DMZ in Vietnam. He was very brief about his experience. Saw a lot of hand to hand.
Today I think more than ever we need to have a mandatory draft. It would help people that grow up in a single family home that lack respect for themselves and others. Our educational system has failed.

If yall have never seen Five Came Back on netflix its worth a watch, D day doesnt come around until some time into the three part series but its worth it. Very moving stuff when you think about what we are seeing today was only because of these gentlemen who went in to get it.
Documentaries is the only thing I can watch in regards to war. 'Battlefields' on youtube is my favorite.
