Don’t sell the 7mm REM Mag short. A really good friend of mine uses a 7mm Rem. mag. He runs a 28” barrel in varmint contour with a brake. He is extremely accurate to 1200 yards which is as far as his range allows. That rifle is boringly accurate. He has been at it a long time. His longest white tail is 1146 yards with the 162 grain Amax in the older metal tipped version. He now runs 162 eldm’s for Whitetail and mas moved to the 180 eldm for larger game such as Elk and African plains game. He and his friend who shoots an identical rifle and similar load with 180 eldm’s recently took 15 animals on his last trip to Africa from 50 to 920 yards. Their guide was questionable at 1st about their use of the eldm but was extremely impressed by their results. Very impressed! He runs Reloader 26 right now and some H 1000 but H 1000 availability isn’t great. He documents every round he fires and generally gets 1200 rounds out of a barrel.I ended up with the 7 mag basically because of what was available. It was either the 7mm or 300 win mag. I figured the 7mm could be used for just abour everything from whitetail to elk. I dont think i would ever try ELR with it, but i would like to be very confident when i squeeze off a round.
You’re right. Once you get past 400-450. You better have good accurate range information and know what your rifle will do. My really longer range hunting is done in the same fields where we have had time to prepare. We set up a table or ”Bench” near the entrance that provides unseen access, shade and good visibility. I‘lll range everything with laser or gps and even have range stakes with flagging at intervals If necessary. Our problem is agricultural fields that are extremely long and can only be accessed from one point. Throw in a prevailing wind direction limits opportunity and that makes getting close without being detected almost impossible most days. Add 40 to 50 deer into that equation plus hogs on a daily basis and what you get are some very costly large scale food plots when you figure seed, fertilizer, chemical, and nitrogen costs. Other deterrents and repellents are also used and they help but sometimes the only way to really make a dent is to reduce the population. At least laws have been changed that allow us to recover and utilize the meat now.Don't know why hunter's fret so much about. caliber's it was about 45 years ago that i walk in to a sporting goods store looking to buy a 30 06 they were sold out of the sale item. so i had a choice ,
270 or 7mm. i chose the 7mm. I still like it . but its a over bore and they eat barrels its a great long
range cartridge. long range to me is 550 yds I shoot a lot. my gun shoot good. all are custom or semi custom I also shoot long range bench rest . guys talk about shooting game at great distance. I see
a lot of so called experts miss a lot game and worst wound animals . everybody has favorite calibers
they all work good. 7mm mag has been great for me even when it had the factory barrel 2800 fps
with speer 160 gr. its got a hart now @ 27'' 160 at 3150 fps killed a lot of deer with both versions
by the way 270 w/w has been good to me too. i'll never say 7's kill better than 30 cal's. 33's kill better
than . you get the picture . back to 7rm's they just work. good rifle good bullet go have fun! old man Rick
I never would have thought of Weatherby making 7mm REM mag brass. InterestingIf you're still having problems finding brass, I have 97 Weatherby stamped 7 REMINGTON mag brass new 2 or 3 once fired, (had to try it). I have never known that Weatherby made 7 Rem brass, but obviously they did. Anyway, for a fair price(for both of us) I'm willing to sell it. I love the 7 mag, have owned them for 45 years...rsbhunter
