Pondering this post this morning, and the discussion of Sierra .20cal bullets, my last trip to the rat patch was a great outing, and the below pic reminded me of the morning I was shooting rats with my 20VT loaded with RL-7 and the 32gr SBK.
Looking at my fired cases, I was reminded of the hit ratio that morning. I didn't keep an accurate record, but anecdotal memories recall my hit ratio was over 90%, probably a bit higher. This is not to say the others I shot that day were any less accurate, but the hit ratio was burned into my memory with constant "bang/thwop" sounds, and the sight of another rat launched skyward. It was a very good morning.
My Cooper M38 Varmint 20VT normaly shoots my usual bullets (32gr NBT & Vargdn) into .25", but the Sierra always turns in the best groups with the same powder charge. We're only talking a few hundreds of an inch better, but better is indeed better.
As for the 34gr Dogtowns, I'm sure they perform well for some, but the better BC of the poly-tipped bullets just seems more attractive, but I've not compared them, so there's that. With the stash of the Nosler's on hand, I'm not really pumped to try something else to replace what has been working very well in my rifle so far. You know, 'if it ain't broke'......
Below is a target shot with the 32gr SBK during load development for reference.
The Nosler plant is only a few flaps of the crow's wings away from home, so that adds to the allure too. We have some great choices in this regard, and choices are always good.
Sherm, great targets shown there buddy. No arguement, those Dogtowns seem to work very well for you. Can you elaborate on how they perform on pd's or rats out past 300 yards? I'm wondering with the decrease in BC how they perform out yonder. Thanks.
