Jlock in Remington 700?

I figured this was as good a place as any to ask! What is this Jlock that I hear people talking about with the newer Remington 700 actions? Is it a bad thing or a problematic thing? Just looking for some understanding is all!

Thanks,
Mike

It's because the new actions have a lock on the bolt shroud, and the opening where the key goes is J shaped... More of a PITA than anything else, and I replace them with Gre-Tan replacement parts including that snakey looking firing pin spring..

Well it may be "functionally" OK....but your rifle can perform much better with better ignition.....the snakey spring will give you erratic ignition & erratic ignition = erratic group size.

The action and bolt are the same as non jlock guns, just the pesky jlock firing pin assembly is the problem. The common term for them is the "wart".

I have installed this on a couple and they were great shooting guns:

Callahan makes one too:

or as Preacher recommended the Gre Tan is also a good solution:

I replaced my J-lock with a shroud & firing pin assembly from Holland.

I believe Remington has since discontinued using the J-lock bolt shrouds, and they are no longer on the newer models.

The J lock was a child deterrent mechanism to begin with. The firing pin springs were no different than any other 700. People hated J locks, said the only way they shoot is to replace them, blah blah blah and blah. Yes, they are ugly. If you have an old Rem with a J lock system, I'll take it off your hands any day you want to part with it. Be careful of the hoopla you read on line. A J lock spring / bolt shroud from a 700 made at the same time one without was made, same junk / same jewel. All in perspective. Nuff said

While the FP spring itself may be the same, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see how the j-lock ass'y with a bunched up spring will result in erratic ignition. You actually have to force them in the bolt body.

Thanks for all the replys guys! I now know what a Jlock is and if I were to purchase one what to do if I wasn't happy with it! That is the beautiful thing about the 700 Remington, there are so many things out there available to upgrade one it isn't funny. Not too good on the wallet though ;)! Thanks again!

Here are some good prices on Remington firing pin assy's at Gretan. They are listed as SA only, but when I called a while back, he asked if I wanted long or short action. This has been about a month ago, so I don't know what he has left.

I have had the pleasure of talking to many wise old accuracy shooters in my day and one common thread was to never give up a known variable that could hurt accuracy. That is somewhat our creed.

jlock: You can disable it. You can say there is no difference. You can say my XYZ Remington is a .001" MOA shooter with one.

Here is a pic of every jlock firing pin ever made right off ebay, but it is exactly like all I have encountered:

If you have ever had the pleasure of shoving that POS firing pin back in a bolt once removed it is a sick feeling if you are truly into accuracy. You know that this process involving spring bind can not be good for ignition. It is like saying my car is fast even though I am dragging the exhaust down the road making pretty sparks. I have never seen a jlock without spring bind. I have never seen a 700 pre or post jlock with spring bind. I am not a young man.

Thanks to companies that make affordable replacements and thanks for my garbage man hauling out the cast aways that I would love for Remington management to use as suppositories.
